Am I over feeding baby?

I’m breastfeeding my son throughout the day. He’s 4 months old. I’ve been feeding him every 3 hrs. Today he spit up so much milk. Almost seems like he spit all he drank. Am I over feeding? He’s also teething right now so it’s hard for me to understand the difference between teething and early hunger cues since his hands are always in his mouth now.

Did he used to spit up a lot? Or is this new?

I’d say baby will take what they want, it’s pretty much impossible to overfeed- they aren’t greedy, they just take what they need. He might just need more frequent burping to help it go down x

@Briony not to this extent. Always has some spit up but not this much. It really seemed like most of the milk was spit up but also it’s so hard to gauge how much milk is coming out while he’s eating 🤦🏻‍♀️

@Emily Timbrell yes I will try burping more! Do you burp for a specific limit of time? Also how do I know when he’s done drinking? Sometimes it’s obvious with him falling asleep, coming off the breast. Other times he starts cooing or getting distracted by things. In those instances I am confused if he’s done or he’s just taking in the sights for a bit.

From what I know breastfed babies don’t overfeed. It’s normal for them to throw up unless he throws up so much he’s not gaining weight. He’s probably comfort eating too esp if testing. I wouldn’t be concerned keep going you’re doing great💖

Try sitting him upright after feeding and persist with the burping. Beyond 3 months they seem to be a lot more efficient with feeding and will be taking in more volume. You could always try paced feeds (encourage pauses during feeds and burp him too). My baby when she’s in pain takes in so much air because she’s being really fussy. If you’re struggling with burps you could try the tiger in a tree hold.

You can’t overfeed an exclusively breastfed baby. Maybe he changed position too quickly, burped or had a bit of reflux. Could have been anything. I wouldn’t worry. My 3 month old always has her hands in her mouth so I look for how clenched her fists look. If her hands seem relaxed, she’s not hungry x

@Evelina thank you, yeah his weight is good thankfully!

@Briony thanks! Yes I’ll try out more burping time. Sometimes he gets very fussy when it’s burp time, like let me get back to the milk!

@Shannon thank you!! I’ll pay closer attention to the hands!
