Cavities

I brush my toddlers teeth everyday maybe not twice a day but at least once. It’s a hassle, has been since day one. I’m pretty sure he is getting cavities. His dentist said he saw them forming months ago and that he might need to have them filled after he was two. They said it was from breastfeeding, i immediately stopped bf. He doesn’t drink juice constantly or eat sweets a whole bunch. I’m so embarrassed it’s his four front teeth. I don’t want my kid having silver caps. I floss his teeth as much as he’ll let me. I feel like a terrible mom.

Hey I’m a dental assistant! Don’t feel terrible please, some peoples genetics play a big role in the development of cavities. If you’re brushing and flossing and keeping sugar to a minimum then you’re doing everything you can! Biggest advice I can give is make him drink water after eating and drinking so nothing is sticking on his teeth for prolonged periods of time. Some pediatricians will apply fluoride varnish to the teeth at check ups so look into requesting that at his next doctors appointment

Sounds like you're doing everything right! As a kid, I was always the one to brush and floss but somehow always had to have a cavity filled. My brother on the other hand never flossed and didn't brush every but NEVER had a single cavity. 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

Maybe try a dry brush (wet toothbrush, but no toothpaste) every time you collect his plate. You can let him do it. It doesn't have to be perfect if you are doing his main brushes. Being mindful about water after meals is great advice and just a great habit overall. I'm going to start today 😁

It’s not from breastfeeding….

You’re not a terrible mommy. I was told it was the breastmilk as well, but I still wasn’t ready to stop his feeding. I keep telling myself his teeth will fall off once his in school what matters is his adult teeth. Like others have said, sometimes it’s just genetics. My oldest daughter wouldn’t eat sweets but still developed cavities, my younger daughter eats sweets so much and she still won’t get any cavities. Just keep doing what your doing and don’t put yourself down ❤️

It’s not from breastfeeding, you are not a terrible mom. I’m curious do you use a fluoride or fluoride free toothpaste? I always recommend the fluoride one and you just use the size of a grain of rice
