Expressed breast milk

Does anyone know how much approximately a 4 week old should be getting with breast milk? Due to some issues whilst still in hospital I had to express milk and that is main form of feeding now (he will feed straight from the breast maybe once or twice a day) every night between 1-4 he is so unsettled and wants to drink constantly but am conscious of giving him too much milk if giving him bottles and not the breast. I want to make sure i am giving him enough but also do not want to overfeed especially during the night when ill be putting him back down to sleep

My 4 week old easily drinks 4oz expressed milk and isn’t sick afterwards so I’m tempted to try him with more as he still seems hungry afterwards! We only do one bottle each evening though to keep up the habit, the rest of the time it’s just breast x

It depends on the weight of your baby. If you multiply the weight in KG by 150 then divide by how many feeds a day you are doing then that would be how much in ml you would give them. Eg 3kg x 150 = 450 ml a day 450 divided by 8 feeds = 57 mls per feed This is what the midwife gave me to work out to help my LG put on weight x

That would be a minimum and obviously give more if your baby is wanting more x

My girl is 4 weeks and we usually give 4oz per feed but sometimes she'll only take 3oz and if she's going through a growth spurt she might have another 1-2oz 30-60 mins after her main feed as a top up x

It would depend on the size of your babe and how hungry they are. Mine is 4 weeks old and 6lbs and has anywhere from 30ml - 80ml per feed (1oz - 2.5oz). On average it's about 60ml (2oz), but if he's hungry we give him more. We'll put 80ml in his bottle and he'll have whatever he can of that. With breaks for burping in-between, he'll have most of it. He feeds every 2-3hours. So has about 500-600ml (17-20oz) In a 24hour period. Hope this helps. There are calculators online if you need more info.

It's more to do with how much they have in a 24 hour period 😊 my 3 week old has 4-4.5 oz every 2 hours before bed but isn't sicky at all, in the day he goes longer and eats less. As long as you're pace feeding and taking regular breaks they shouldn't overeat 😊

Thank you so much everyone, my baby was having 90ml per feed every 3 hours but during the night seems he wants a lot more than that and was worried to increase it too much, he was 8lb 8 at birth but lost a lot of his birth weight, last week he weighed 8lb 3

They say roughly 1 to 1.5oz per hour between feeds, pace fed. So if there's been an hour between feeds then i would put 1.5oz in the bottle. If there's been 3 hours between then 4.5 oz in the bottle , and let them take as much of it as they need x
