Newborn Advice / Experiences - Breastfed baby - Gave formula once as a top up massively regret it - Anyone experience this did baby’s digestion go back to normal?

My baby is only 4 days old. I didn’t feel she was getting enough before my milk came through so I tried to top her up with abit of formula. Since then she has vomited, had more hiccups / struggled to poo and also seems to be bringing up breast milk after feeds. I regret giving it her and she clearly hasn’t reacted well to it. Will this ruin it for her for the future or will this pass after 24/48 hours anyone else experienced this? My milk is now through so no more formula!

It will pass don't worry. 🫂

No it won't ruin anything! We had to give formula top ups and our LG initially had a reaction like this. We were supposed to get 40ml in her after every breast feed and it seemed like it was an impossible task 😅 but she eventually adapted to having forma alongside, and then we were able to wean her off it and just kept one formula feed at night. If you ever need to give her formula in the future there's no reason she can't have it. Good luck with your breastfeeding journey!

@Audrey aww this is so reassuring thank you x

@Sophie oh this is so comforting to know! How long did it take your little one for it to pass? Like normal digestion again? Thank you it’s such a worry I’m a first time mum and I just seem to be worrying about everything even though she’s a healthy baby. I can’t rake my eyes off her. Watching her breath etc is this a normal thing?

I wouldn’t worry about giving formula, that won’t have caused these symptoms. To put you at ease - it’s also completely normal to have hiccups, vomit small amounts after feeds and have wind/ constipation even when exclusively breast fed. So if these symptoms do come back, you’re not doing anything wrong! x

I had to do this with my baby because milk not coming through and midwife made me feel i had to plus I was totally overwhelmed emergency c section etc. But once I calmed down stop stressing milk came through and she still is now breastfeed and that's it. She did throw up the formula too I think her stomach couldn't settle on it plus they were like you need to give her this amount and her lil stomach wasn't use to it. So just keep going with it expect lil bits to come up sometimes especially moving around to quickly after a feed I found. But you'll get there. And I think she was initially sick that's it. Breast milk is natural laxative so she will pooo and can go quite a while sometimes on breast milk before she does poo x

@Amelia it took a while but we had to persevere with the formula top ups as she had lost so much weight. Probably around a week before she was able to take the volume of formula. It shouldn't take that long for your LO as they only had formula as a one off. It's normal to worry about your baby but you need rest too! If you're finding the worry is consuming every moment or making you feel extremely anxious or distressed, and you can't sleep or look after yourself properly because of it, then speak to the health visitor or GP.

If baby is gaining wet and having plenty of wet nappies they are getting enough even before the milk comes through cos they have tiny tummies.
