Requesting an elective c-section, UK...

Hey! This is my 3rd baby and I have my heart set on having an elective c-section. My mental health has been bad since 6 weeks pregnant and I'm already on citalopram. I also very bad sickness during labour. Plus i don't have much family close for childcare for a quick/ unplanned labour. I'm just so worried I'll go to my appointment next week and the doctor says no to giving me one. Any advice or personal stories? Tia Xx

Your doctor can’t say no to you wanting one but they may advise against it if it’s not necessarily a physical medical reason for wanting one, however you have very valid reasons so just be firm it’s your birth !

They can’t say no, they can try to talk you out of it but essentially it’s up to you 🙂 just stay firm on what you want x (I had an emergency c section last time and they have already tried to talk me in to a VBAC twice and the midwives mentioned it at every appointment 😬)

They can’t deny you one. It’s their duty and their job to explain that it’s major abdominal surgery and the risks that come with it but they cannot deny you one. However I will say if you don’t have family close for childcare or support then possibly just think about that as you will be out of action for a little while after the surgery and the recovery isn’t the easiest X

@Becca thankyou! My mother in law is a 40min drive so we do have some help just not quick help if in labour. Plus my husband has 6 weeks off work, luckily!

Consultant and midwife were pushing for me to have a natural birth but I stood my ground. I had to have a call with the consultant midwife for my area for her to go through all the risks (again) and then after that my consultant authorised it. My reasons were severe PGP/SPD and anxiety over a traumatic experience my mum went through with my brother x

You have a right to stand up for yourself and stay firm if wanting a c section but I will tell you recovery was hard At least for me it was. If it’s a prepared c section it’s not as bad as emergency one. It still takes longer for recovery longer than normal birth and more painful. If it’s something you still want then that’s what you should have. You definitely need people to help take care of you after and kids have to becareful not to jump on u re rear your incisions open.

They can’t say no! Just make sure you go prepared & show them you are well informed, you’ve read up on all of the risks and have decided it’s the best option for you

@Eve thankyou! Are you also at Derby Royal??

No Nottingham x
