TTC and Breastfeeding

I am currently still breastfeeding my first once a day but planning on stopping this weekend. I am also trying to conceive. Just wondering if the breastfeeding is likely to prevent pregnancy?

If you have been having regular periods, then likely no. It honestly depends on the woman. For me, my periods are super far apart when I breastfeed. Like in 13 months I only had 3 periods. And with my second I only breastfed for 7 months and I only had one super weird period. I ended up getting a pelvic ultrasound and my body was making eggs but not ovulating them lol. So for me breastfeeding was good birth control. But yes, it's a myth that breastfeeding prevents pregnancy. You can still ovulate and get pregnant.

I got pregnant while breastfeeding my 2yo. My period was regular for the months prior. I’ve also done ovulation testing, just to know

Thanks ladies. I stopped taking the pill on 8th January. We’ve just started trying to conceive now. I have had two periods since I stopped taking the pill plus I’m stopping breastfeeding this weekend. I haven’t done ovulation tests but my apple health says my ovulation window is now.

If you’re having regular periods then no it shouldn’t affect conceiving. Just make sure you’re getting enough iron and healthy fats. I’m still breastfeeding my 15 months old (trying to stop but my toddler is very stubborn) and I’m 9 weeks pregnant now.

@Jenna I’m actually taking iron tablets every day at the moment because my iron levels were low. Hopefully that helps. My son is 2.5 and he doesn’t show any signs of stopping so I’m going to stop this weekend and try to switch to cows milk to give myself a break before the next one arrives.

Fingers crossed he transitions smoothly for you! I also want a bit of a break before the next one comes. You’ve BF’ed for so long 💪!

@Jenna thank you, first morning of no breastfeeding today and he drank his cows milk pretty quickly. I’m honestly very proud of myself for getting to 2.5.
