Swaddling

How and when did everyone transition baby from arms in to arms out when swaddling at night time? Thanks!

We’ve had arms out for a long time but I know they recommend when baby starts rolling. We did one at a time, probably like 5-7 days with one arm out then went to both. Was fine.

@Kirstin thanks for the reply! was the transition hard at all? In terms of more frequent wake ups? My eldest two hated being swaddled so never had to think about all of this before 😂

4 months ! X

@Abi I did the same approach as Kirstin and the main issue we faced was the startle reflex but that was back when we sometimes had to put her to sleep and transfer her. These days she gets herself to sleep and doesn’t really have that reflex anymore so hopefully you’ll have a better chance of keeping your little one asleep if you have to transfer them. But defo recommend trying one arm out initially.

Yes similar to Cheryl we had a few startles when we did it but I think by now that reflex is way less so you might be ok. We’re not at self settle to sleep stage yet so I still transfer when asleep and just sometimes gently guide her arms down to the bed when I put her down. She adapted really well so hopefully your little one will too. Oh the other thing that was a me thing not a baby thing was I worried her hands were cold but they were absolutely fine and apparently normal. You’ll be used to that if you’ve got other babies though, this is my first. Hope it goes well!

We did a week in a long armed sleeping bag which really helped!

We transitioned to a long sleeve sleeping bag around 5 months and it was fine, she was a bit jumpy and startled herself for a night or two, but she’s fine now and happy in it. Once it starts to get a bit warmer I’ll transition her again to arms out sleeping bag. She’s not rolling yet so I’m not worried about her getting stuck with the long sleeves etc. Only problem is this bag has built in mittens and she ends up pulling her dummy out constantly or scratching her face whenever we don’t use it🤦🏽‍♀️x

I have both boys with one arm out now, just put them down, fingers crossed!
