Potty training

When to start potty training?! My LG 18 months old, but was born 2 months prem so is assessed on what her age should have been. She has showed signs of starting. She pulls at her nappy, she crouches to poo, and she does all nappy changes standing up. We have tried nappy free time but she gets overwhelmed and ends up in a state. She will happily sit on the potty but then has the nappy back on in between. Is there anything I should be doing to help

I’d say start now if she’s showing those signs. We’ve started with our 18mo, probably a couple of months ago, but at that stage literally just getting him used to the idea of a potty. We’re moving on to the next now. It really depends which approach you want to take! There are different methods where you do specific things at specific stages but we’re going with a child led approach. I found reading the ERIC website really useful.

@Rebecca oohhh okay I will have a look into that thank you! The only method I had really seen was the 3 days completely nappy free but she absolutely hates being without the nappy after a while

@Rosie yeah that’s definitely not the one for us! We’re taking it slow, just letting him get used to it and let us know when he’s ready for each stage. Different methods work for different families though!

@Rosie I think 3 day methods are unrealistic except for very ready 20-30 month olds look at something more age appropriate like tiny potty by Andrea olson (for 18mo but some do it earlier) or oh crap (aimed at 20 mo +). It takes the pressure off as you stay bottomless as long as it takes the child to click rather than a set number of days. So for an adjusted age of 16 mo you may be looking at 2-3 weeks at home bottomless or commando before moving to the next step. Really each child will have their own timeline, so the books advertising 3 days are setting most parents up for disappointment and frustration. I'm doing EC with mine since 12 mo which is appropriate for 0-18mo and soon we will move to the tiny potty method. With me he's had no home nappy since mid Jan and got all poop in the potty for a lot of days in a row now but not keeping track as don't want to jinx it or add pressure ❤️🙏
