I found therapy to be generally unhelpful but I know everyone is different. I did a lot of anxiety workbooks that taught me coping skills and I listened to a lot of mediations. In hindsight I wished I would have just taken medication since it was directly related to being post partum.
Medication AND therapy
From my personal experience, therapy is fantastic if you can afford it or if you can wait for the NHS waiting list (UK based). Medication takes a long time to settle and kick in properly. I didn't find it very useful personally but some people swear by it so worth a try! If you have the option I would do both, they're great for different reasons and work well together.
I suffered from panic attacks a couple years back it was horrible I couldn’t drive I had to quit school , my hubby had to force me to leave the house to get therapy and it was the best thing for me ; they taught me about triggers and breaking the cycle of avoidance with my triggers , I also cut out caffeine, made sure I slept better and went outside every day, also have them check your vitamin D levels my were really low and low vitamin D has been linked to anxiety and depression in some cases , also GOD I found a lot of peace in getting closer to God 💕
Highly recommend both therapy and medication - both the immediate release (Xanax, Klonopin) & the daily ssri. Finding the right therapist is hard. If you have the luxury of doing it, cbt was a preferred method for me. Also had a therapist recommend The Feeling Good Handbook which was really helpful to.
I suppose the resources you have available to you will widely depend on where you are located and how old your child or children are. If possible, it’s always best to be properly assessed and go with whatever recommendation you’re given. More often than not, the most effective way to treat such issues is by combining talking therapies with medication to help with symptoms until you see positive changes. Medication alone won’t tackle the cause of the panic attacks and is unlikely to help long-term which is what you should be aiming for.
