Dilated/ effaced

I had my 38 weeks doctor appointement today and i had a cervical check done. Not what i expected AT ALL! The discomfort was unreal... anyways my doctor told me i was 50% effaced but close to 0 dilated... she told me that she doesnt recommend me going past 40 weeks so shes putting me on the induced list. Has anyone had experience a similar situation and ended up going to labor naturaly??

Hello Danika! Do you have more details on why she is recommending an induction? Is there a medical history that would justify it, or is it only based on your cervix?

@Stéphanie - Doula she only told me because i have a higher Bmi... she explained to me the whole thing behind it i just can't remember it.

Before making any decisions, you might want to ask her about the risks and benefits of inducing now versus postponing or waiting for labor to start naturally. It's completely normal to have little to no cervical change at 38 weeks. Your cervix isn't a reliable predictor of when labor will begin—someone could be 3 cm dilated and still wait days for labor to start, while another person with a closed cervix could go into labor the next day. If you choose to induce early, your body may require more interventions to "convince" it to go into labor. That said, many women with a higher BMI still go into labor naturally. Ultimately, it comes down to what risks and benefits you're comfortable with and what aligns best with your preferences.

@Stéphanie - Doula thank you 🫶 i hope to go in labor naturaly but im still debating the whole thing. Its my first pregnancy so i don't know what to expect.

To support what Stephanie said, at 39+2, I was 0cm dilated and went into labour less than 12 hours later with my first.

@Danika you could request to be monitored more often (non-stress test) and postpone the induction for a bit longer. See what your doctor says.

@Stéphanie - Doula ill consider it! Thank you very much 🫶

@Stéphanie - D do you have any tips for naturaly going into labor?

Nipple stimulation (you can hand exress your colostrum under the shower, you can even try to collect it if you feel like it - out of the shower, that is 😉) Intercourse (prostaglandin in semen can help ripen your cervix, also feeling close to your partner and having an orgasm release oxytocin) Physiotherapy (they can prep your body for labour if there are imbalances in your pelvis) Acupuncture Pressure points (above the ankle - you might as well ask your spouse to give you a foot massage) The Miles Circuit Doing things you like and make you feel relaxed.

These are not induction methods, but they help boost your hormones to encourage labour. They can also help baby to be in an optimal position that will put more pressure on your cervix and help with dilation.

Also, you could ask your doctor to do a sweep. It's not comfortable and isn't always successful to put someone in labour, but it sometimes does.

Doesn’t sound like there’s any real reason to consent to induction. You will go into labour when you’re ready. At my 42 week appointment I was 0 dilated and 0 effaced. I still wasn’t even a good candidate for induction, but I still went into labour naturally that night
