Royal Derby labour ward

Hi everyone, I’m due to give birth at RDH next month and just wanted to get an idea of what people thought of the labour ward? I’m consultant-led so won’t be in the midwife-led birth centre unfortunately, but really want to feel as prepared of the environment I’ll be giving birth in as I can! Also any tips on making it as comfortable as possible or any advice would be appreciated ☺️

I was consultant led in the labour ward it was fantastic start to finish, amazing staff x

hi ! i gave birth at rdh it was an overall good experience, your partner can stay all the way until yiu get discharged as well! i had my first at burton and derby is so much better

The Derby labour ward was fantastic with my first, I was consultant led but had a midwife led birth and they made sure I had all my wishes met! I can’t speak highly enough of them!

@talia oh that’s so good partners can stay! Can I ask if you had your own room the whole time or were you transferred back to a shared ward after birth? And if you were on a shared ward where do partners stay? X

@Katie it was a shared ward after id given birth but my boyfriend slept on the chair next to the bed x

@Becca that’s so good to hear 😌. Can I ask how you went about having a midwife led birth bring consultant-led? I have my birth choices meeting coming up so any tips would be amazing!

@talia perfect thank you 😌

@Katie my consultant popped in during my labour but I don’t know if it would be any different for you cause it might depend on why your consultant led! Mine was only for gestational diabetes! Where as this time round I think my consultant will be heavily involved as I am carrying twins! Honestly the midwife’s were amazing they made sure I was heard when I wanted something and constantly made me comfy! A student midwife delivered my baby and I wouldn’t have had it any other way it was special for us and her which was amazing! Xx

@Becca ah okay thank you! I’m consultant-led because of having a a large baby and a diabetes risk (but I don’t have it). So hopefully it will be similar to how yours went! Huge congratulations on expecting twins! So exciting for you 🥰. That’s so good to hear your experience was so positive, really helps ease the nerves! X

@Katie yeah yours might be very similar to mine then babs, you consultant might be present when your pushing just incase but hopefully you get the birth you want! Thank you babs I can’t wait to meet them haha! Good I am glad I’ve eased your nerves! Honestly during labour if you have any worries just talk to the midwife’s xx
