Bottle feedings

How long does it take for your baby to finish a bottle? And how much do they eat? My 10 week old takes almost an hour to finish her 4oz bottle (breast milk). We have to burp her after 2oz, but then she slows down after and will kind of cluster feed the last 2oz.. We tried giving her only 2.5-3oz bottles but she would finish it and get hungry after 30min so we had to give her another extra ounce. She eats about every 2.5-3hours. At night she is able to sleep 3-4 hours stretch and will sometimes finish all 4oz in 20min.. We’ve tried extending the daytime feedings to every 3-4 hours but she cannot go that long, she will literally scream/cry the second she starts to feel hunger. Is it normal for 2 month old to take this long to feed?

My 9 week old drinks 6 oz in like 15 minutes

My 8 week old eats 5oz in about 15 minutes (formula)

An hour seems like a long time. My little guy eats 5oz in 10-15 minutes.

Have you tried changing the nipple level to a faster flow? This is about the age where they can move up and that might help decrease the feeding time.

@Sarah was going to say the same too. We went up to the next one and it helped a lot.

My LO. Drinks 8oz in 10-15mins if that. Have you look to see if the baby has a tongue tie? I know this slows down eating time.

Yes, agree with the other comments about upping the nipple

@Sarah Yes we tried changing it to a size 3 on the Phillip avent natural response bottle a few weeks ago but it seemed a little too fast cause she was choking on it and spitting up a lot. I will try it again and see if she does better with it now.

@Kassie yes we’ve checked but she doesn’t have tongue tie

I have a reflux baby with Laryngomalacia so it takes about 30 minutes with 4-6 oz with all the stops to burp (after every ounce). The burps is what makes it longer not the actual feeding part.

My baby will chug the first half and then putz around with the second half of a 4oz bottle too but this generally only happens with formula and not with breast milk bottles.

Are they falling sleep at the bottle and just doing comfort sucking? I feed mine side lying so I can watch their suck/swallow reflex and when they stop sucking, I stroke their chin or head. I also tip the bottle down to press the nipple on the roof of their mouths to remind them to suck. These were tips the SLP at the NICU gave us since I have premie twins but may help for any sleepy eater.

My 7 week old eats 4-5oz in 10-20 minutes. I’ve been having to feed him smaller amounts more often some days because he spits up a lot.

About 15-20 minutes from 3-4 ounces.

My 11 week old eats 5 oz in about 30 minutes we use dr brown bottles with size 1 nipple or out and about boon bottles also with size 1 nipple

My baby was the same when using the Phillips avent bottles. I felt like all I did was feed her because she would take so long to finish a bottle. I switched to the Tommee tippee and then to the Lansinoh bottles and she can finish a bottle in 20 minutes now.

I was having this issue with my baby but then tried the next nipple size up. His feedings now are anywhere from 10-30 minutes. 🙂 I will say though, a new nipple size takes a little bit of time for your baby to adjust to. I also try to burp my baby every 2-3 ounces to avoid spitting up
