Exclusively pumping… for now

I am exclusively pumping my breast milk to give to my baby in a bottle as he wouldn’t latch onto my breast from birth. It’s taking a toll on me (I am using formula also), I am looking to stop pumping and switching to formula completely. Does anyone have any advice on the best way to wean off pumping? I don’t want to suddenly stop but not sure what is the best way to go about it..

What they did for my daughter while she was in nicu they started mixing and slowly take the breast milk out and do more formula.

@Ceci thank you, I am trying to up the formula and pump less but I am worried about engorged breasts happening, if I don’t pump for 5+ hours my boobs start to get full and sore

I kept my regular pumping schedule but started to pump for less time, just to ease the pain. And then I slowly started to increase time between pumps. Think it took me about 3 weeks but I was very prone to mastitis so was extra cautious and took my time. I then kept leaking for a few more months every now and then

@Holly that definitely happened to me and it was awful. But I would recommend slowly dropping a session. So for instance drop one session a day for a week, then the following week drop down again and so forth depending on how fast your trying to slow down then drop a session once every few days. But in the event you do get engorged, nice hot showers and a warm compress and a massage.

Was in your exact boat lovely, I stopped pumping (FTM novice…) went cold turkey and ended up in triage with the engorgement, still not sure if I got thrush or mastitis but they said it was good that I went when I did as it would have been really bad. The pain was AWFUL!! I’m a section mum and not even my incision pain has been that bad which is saying something… so my advice would be to slowly, slowly (even if it takes weeks) to elongate the time between the pumping sessions and hopefully that’ll keep things at bay. Not an easy decision or thing to go through, my heart goes out to you❤️ our boy is thriving on formula - a fed baby is a happy baby remember!

Was in the same situation. The midwife told me to pump but never empty the breast fully as this signals more production. I did that and increased the window between pumps. Took me about a week to stop pumping completely and maybe another week to feel like the milk production has stopped and wouldn't come back too quickly

Thank you ladies for all your comments ❤️ I’ve started to reduce a pumping session, today my right breast is feeling painful so going to use a warm compress and see if this helps to settle it down, I’ve noticed I am producing less already though from both breasts

@Holly use ice not heat! The pain is usually from swelling so ice will help the pain better. Xx

@Holly hey, I know you have an update yesterday but this morning you were on my mind. How are things going now? Do you feel any better?
