Did they not give you any instruction? Usually for newborns the instructions are to apply Vaseline on a gauze pad for several days inside the diaper. Not sure for older children, is he potty trained?

That’s very irresponsible of dad to not retain important details regarding his sons surgery. I would call the clinic it was performed at and either ask for another copy of papers or just ask them what to do. If they won’t speak to you about it have him call but be there on speaker.
