I used nipple cream and ice packs in between her feedings to ease the pain
In the beginning I would cry they hurt so bad. But over time they have toughened up a lot! I used lanolin cream religiously. My baby also does a shallow latch so it could just happen because of that! I hope it gets better soon!
I had this problem for two weeks babe has a tongue tie but now it seems better but i pump every 3 hours as well as breastfeed and when i tolerate it and she latches properly.. if the pain is bad and u contacted a lactation consultant just pump every 3 hours so your supply stays up
I can not recommend silver nipple shields enough - the first few weeks of breastfeeding is tough and I almost gave in due to the pain and cracking. But I then invested in some silver nipple shields (off Amazon) and they saved my life!! They healed and soothed soo quickly. Absolutely must have for breastfeeding, my little girl is now 14 months and we are still exclusively breastfeeding. Hope this helps, good luck xx
My lactation consultant recommended hydrogel cooling pads for any cracking and stinging pain. (the Frida mom ones are what I got and they’re nursing friendly). I basically alternate using a nipple butter and the gel pads between feeds/pump sessions. I have something on my nipples pretty much at all times to help. I was having stinging as well and she prescribed me a steroid cream to use for 5 days and I haven’t needed to use it since. It was a good little boost for my sensitivity but had to wipe off before pumping and feeding and apply 3 times a day. It gets better, but I’d recommend also trying to figure out the LO’s latch with a lactation consultant as well so it doesn’t go on forever!
Tender yes but stinging no. Best advice is try to really shove it in baby’s mouth to get deeper. Also- to heal, I highly recommend silverettes in between feedings. I feel they helped me heal the most. More than lanolin. Just don’t use both at the same time
@Megan this!!! The hospital actually gave me a pair because I was in so much pain after just a day. My baby doesn’t have a tongue tie issue but his latch is not deep. The silver nipple shields for in between sessions is amazing. I also use silicone nipple shields while breastfeeding and do like 2 feeds a day without.
So you can make lotion out of your breast milk and it’s super healing! My little one also has a shallow latch so nursing is painful. To help I make a lotion comprised of aquaphora, coconut oil, and breast milk. It’s easy to make and it’s her good for baby’s skin and also your nipples!
Hydro gel pads worked very quickly for me! I would switch out between two pairs, keeping one in the freezer. I leak a lot of milk so the silverettes didn’t do much for me because it would always be wet. If one side is worse than the other, then maybe take a break for a day on one side and just pump that side so it can heal up quicker. Your nipples also will toughen up.
It goes away at about six weeks
Express milk from your breast and apply it directly to your nipple; this can help it heal quickly. When I was at the hospital the day after giving birth, my baby accidentally caused a small injury to my nipple while breastfeeding. The lactation nurse expressed milk from my breast and applied it to the area, and it healed just a few hours later. Breast milk contains live white blood cells that can help heal pretty much anything.
For me it only really hurt for few days and here and there it happens. Earth mama nipple butter was a big help. Also just the knock off silverettes (koala silver cups on Amazon) with just a little breast milk inside and put on for a while inside bra worked amazing! U got this mama
Try some lanolin nipple cream after every feed, and lansinoh cooling gel pads.
