We used a dummy from really early on during a tricky feeding journey. She’s 10am this now and not reliant on it. She’ll use it at bedtime or if she’s upset but not over attached. I will say, check the ages on the soothers you go for. I didn’t realise in the early days that they’re different and need to change with age due to their little mouths growing!
Midwives advise from 6 weeks but I gave mine dummies from 3 weeks and had no issues. Honestly, whatever works for you 😊
Him using you as a dummy is normal and is just him trying to get your body to regulate your milk supply. It’s like he’s ordering more milk for the next day etc. if you give a dummy it could interfere with his feeding cues and it can affect your supply. If you feel you must give a dummy then do it cautiously and make sure he is still being put to the breast very frequently. The suckling stage does settle after a few weeks I promise. I’ve been breastfeeding 2 kids for a total of 5 years and once that stage settles it’s so easy
My baby was in Nicu and the doctors there gave him a dummy at 2 days old to soothe him in his little incubator, no issues at all and they’re actually meant to be one of the things that can help prevents SIDS. I didn’t breastfeed though!
I always felt it lucky to be able to use breastfeeding as a way to soothe, like an easy option x
If he has a bottle anyway I don’t see an issue with introducing the dummy! X
@Alex yeah I know NHS advises from 6 weeks week if breastfed! Can I ask whether you bottle fed or breast fed?
I combi fed after the first 24 hours (first 24 hours was exclusively breast) I was too scared to exclusively bf as my first baby suffered low blood sugar so I wanted to measure what she got. I expressed into a bottle with formula and the occasional breast feeding. Now I’m exclusively formula though. But I think the reason is so their latch doesn’t suffer but a dummy will be like a bottle xx
Whenever First born took to it day 2 This baby won’t take one 5 weeks in
My little boy lost too much weight after he was born so we had to start on formula on day 3 so we gave him a dummy at a about a week old and he's been obsessed with it since. It calms him really well and is great when we're waiting for the bottle to warm up. Highly recommend the mam dummies, my boy doesn't like any other's and I've heard the same from other parents
I gave my little boy a dummy when he was a week old, he's still ebf at 18 weeks old and it's caused us bo problems whatsoever. He's not overly attached to it either, he's starting pulling it out of his mouth 🤣
My baby had a dummy by day 3, it all depends on you and your little one. X
@Louise lol I love that phrase, ordering more for the next day 😂💖 it makes me feel so much better about half hour feeds where she ends up sucking my nip to the point of it going white n painful xx
I waited six weeks as recommended and my LO won't take it now

From birth was what the NICU told me. He stopped using it at like 5-6 weeks old and refused to take it again
@Jenny if you can’t hear her swallowing then entry breast compressions it can stimulate a bit more milk to come down and she will either drink it or she will come off because she’s just ordering and doesn’t want it now. Then you know whether or not you can end the feed
He's your baby there's no limit give whenever x
