Nipple refusal

My baby is 13 weeks and has started to refuse to nurse. He will eat pumped milk but will start crying and jerking around when i try to breastfeed. I have had to feed formula when he refuses and I now have mastitis due to my pumping not being consistent i think. Anyone else go through this?

That sounds stressful I’m so sorry. I think it’s really confusing for babies to go from a fake nipple to a real one - they have to suck so much harder on the real one. If it was me I would dump the pump, get in a quiet, dark space with my baby skin to skin and persevere until they nursed. I would then keep nursing as much as possible to get rid of the mastitis and to re-establish that bond and routine. But whatever you do good luck and let me know if you need tips on how to clear the mastitis I’ve had it a bunch of times 😩🤎

@Sabrina yes please I would love tips on clearing mastitis!

So for me it’s just painkillers straight away cuz I’m a bit of a whimp… to bring the fever down and help with the aches and pain. Then I get in bed and stay there as much as possible, calling in all the support I can possibly get. No bra to let the milk flow out of the breasts freely. Hot baths and hot water bottles (I know the new advice is cold but that just feels wrong to me on every level). I give gentle massage. I rest and breastfeed as much as possible but the golden fix for me is loads of ginger and turmeric because they are anti inflammatory. For me they work like a charm ✨
