Older siblings babysitting

So, I have an 11 year old (almost 12) and a 3 year old. I was talking to a friend about how my husband and I were going to pay for a professional babysitter so we can finally have some couple time. She said well why don't you put the 3 years to bed and leave the 11 years on the sofa to keep an ear out and can ring you if the little one wakes up. Is it acceptable at this age? Has anyone else got the same age kids and did this? I, of course, would never leave ny 11 years to look after the 3 years in the day, but if the toddler is in bed safe, is it acceptable? Please let me know what you think everyone!

As someone who was left with my sibling at very similar ages - no I wouldn’t. The toddler could wake or be ill, anything could happen, and I don’t think 11 is old enough to be home alone let alone in charge of a younger sibling, even if they are asleep. For peace of mind I’d get the babysitter x

I personally don’t think it’s okay

Not at all personally I wouldn't x

Thanks for the replies. I think I may give it another year. At this time, she will be 13, then reassess the situation. I would never go far and would stay in the local vicinity anyway, but it's great to have other's POV in these situations.

It depends on the children in question, the one babysitting responsible and sensible, is the little one comfortable with the eldest, listens to them etc. I do think 11 is a little too young

No I wouldn’t. Although LO will be asleep anything can happen and that’s a big responsibility for an 11 year old. Your choice but I think a responsible adult needs to be present. Like you suggested a babysitter 👍🏻

@Kath yeah I mean, I used to look after my 4 year old sister when I was 11/12, but this was 20 years ago, and I was very independent. Kids are not so streetwise as us '90s kids were. Thanks for your pov :)

I would not. If you were just nipping to shop for milk maybe, but not for date night
