It shouldn’t be painful, this type of sensation could mean your baby isn’t latching correctly. Does your nipple change to a slant shape when you take it out of baby’s mouth? It could also be the baby is suctioned on very well. Also when you’re pumping try starting a the lowest setting. I found that when I turned it on without paying attention to the setting it hurt sooo bad because the suction pulled my nipple really hard 😭😭
I feel like I could have written this! It turned out I had mastitis and extreme inflammation. I’d go to see your GP. I ended up on antibiotics for 3 weeks but it then settled and I have an 8 month old who I breastfeed pain free! Heat packs helped me just before feeding. Also, look up ‘dangle feeding’. Feels very strange but it really helped me! X
@Eviee I think his suction is quite strong as not as painful with the pumps but I always have to start on the 1st setting and then work my way up every few mins. I got my latch assessed and they said it was perfect and I don’t get pain while feeding.
@Amy I did get mastitis and was in antibiotics for this, just finished. Really want to continue with breastfeeding and expressing for little one. This pain is in both breasts unfortunately, but I will look at the dangle feeding , thank you 🙂
@Cesca yes it’s the first initial latch and first seconds when milk drawn out then pain goes, it lit brings a tear to my eye it’s that sharp 😭
@Jade I’d go back, honestly I was exactly the same. They can give you slightly stronger antibiotics that are still safe for breastfeeding. 💕
@Amy oh really was it just the latch part that was sharp pain for u too? I know it’s not meant to be like that 🤦♀️ I did tell midwife and they said it could be that I’m very sensitive or baby has strong latch.
@Jade yes, just as you described- hell for like 30 seconds max then fine. I almost gave up breastfeeding. Midwives and health visitors just told me it was normal but I knew it wasn’t. X
@Jade ive had it with both my babies during letdown throughout breastfeeding without ever having an infection. Also if baby misses a feed sleeping longer than normal and milk starts flowing. It’s quite sharp and i sometimes shout ‘ouch!’ But it goes really quick. I think i have a super fast let down and have always put it down to that.
If you Google natural breastfeeding and click on the first one (natural breastfeeding love to love breastfeeding) they have a really handy video on how to get you and baby in the correct position to latch and breastfeed. My baby now latches lovely x
Is it when the milk first flows out? If so, then sounds normal. Hurts more for some people than others.
