Expressed milk

My 5 week old had a bottle of expressed milk for the first time tonight, there was just under 4oz in the bottle, less than an hour later she was fussing for more milk. She doesn't usually feed twice in less than an hour. Just curious anyone who expresses milk for their baby how much are you giving them? I went by online advice that under 2 months old will have 2-3oz per feed but I'm wondering if maybe she needs more than that! It's not an issue I just put her on the breast for another feed but I hadn't long pumped so not sure if that's an issue as I read its best to pump at least an hour before next feed

I give 120ml as it’s all I can manage to express but my 6 week old usually wants a breast top up after x

I got advised by infant feeding team that the total recommended for the day is Weight in kilos x 150ml So my little girl is 5 x 150ml = 750ml per day If feeding 8 times that'll be 93.75ml approx per feed (just over 3oz) (That said, as long as you're getting 6+ wet and 3+ dirty nappies approx then that's good too)

@Rebecca ooh okay thats pretty similar then I think in ml it was about 110!

@Emma that's very interesting! By that my LG is having waaay more than expected 😅 she's 3.6kg so would be 540ml/day averaging around 12 feeds a day = 45ml / 1.5oz per feed 🤯 and she had 110ml and then breast fed about 40 mins later for 20 mins. And she's still dropped 2 centiles as well!

@Emma her nappies I guess also reflect how much milk she's getting, we average about 12 nappies a day 🙈

It could be that she is wanting the breast foe comfort more than actual ‘food’ as she would have missed that having had the bottle for a feed. My 4 month old is EBF and has one of her feeds a day as an expressed bottle but 8/10 she will want the comfort for me not long after. I would have pumped to replace her feed at the time but she just wants the comfort x

Hope that made sense I’m half asleep typing with one eye open 😂 x

@Carla ahh that's such a good point I didn't think about the comfort side of things! She took the bottle so well, no fuss at all it didn't cross my mind she might miss the connection with me 🥺

@Hannah when I first started giving her a bottle she would always want breast not long after and I always used to think surly not? How could you be hungry so soon and it went on for weeks and weeks and then someone said it to me and I was like that makes so much sense! Thankfully it’s not always so it does give me a longer break sometimes but other times I know she just needs me and that’s okay 🩷

I was expressing milk when my baby was a newborn because of broken nipples and she was having 3oz per feeding every couple of hours (she was 3/4 weeks old at the time but she was a big baby, she was 3.6kg at birth so probably over 4kg at 4 weeks old, I don’t remember exactly lol)
