I’m due mid August so I’ve got two 1 togs to use. My daughter was 5th August and we used sleeping bags from birth with the guide above.
@Shannon they can go in them from birth. Lullaby trust recommends sleeping bags as safe alternatives to blankets as long as they fit well
@Alicia must’ve changed since u had my daughter! Do you know where sells newborn ones? Haven’t seen in shops x
@Shannon the tommee tippee grobags and the love to dream ones are approved for newborns I think, and you can choose to have them arms in or out.
@Shannon my boy was quite big and he fit well straight into 0-6 month ones from Tesco and my HV said they were fine for him! But I know love to dream ones are really good especially for newborns x
@Alicia thank you lovely, I had no idea x
@Shannon I think as long as they fit around the neck and arms and baby can’t wriggle down inside of them it’s all ok! My boy was 8lb 5oz but my friends little girl was only 4lb 9oz and she couldn’t use them for the first few months as she was too little xx
Also I found that my newborn would still be cold in the recommended tog. She was born in the heat of July but her hands would be freezing at night. Either go up half a tog (if your baby needs it) and put mittens on or keep them near you in a safe way to get some body heat
@Khadija don’t test their body temp by the hands. Hands and feet will usually be cold because babies have poor circulation. Also check the back of their neck or their chest otherwise you risk over heating them.
You can get bodysuits or sleepsuits with integrated mittens in. The use of individual mittens are not recommended for baby to sleep in as they pose a suffocation risk and are a potential choking hazard, just bare in mind 🥰
Just remember that sleeping bags have a weight guide (should be on the box or their website) often times newborns are too small for them.
As well as weight and making sure their heads don't pass through the neck hole, check the recommended length of baby on the packaging. Ours outlines safe use and we saw there was a minimum length measurement.
Pretty sure they aren’t meant to go in sleeping bags until they’re older 3 months plus? I could be wrong but sure my health visitor said this to me. I just swaddled in a cellular blanket and made sure the room was the correct temp using a grow egg x
