We had a choice to pick it up at the county office or have it mailed, but chose the pick it up ... And still haven't 🫣. Could that be why? You could always call labor and delivery and ask for the birth certificate person.
@Kyla I made the same mistake with my first and it took me a while to actually get out to get it 😬 a lot longer than I'm willing to admit 😅😅😅
MD- my son was born 1/17 and it was ready a week later but I picked it up from vital records on 1/31.
@Brittany I don't really NEED it for anything yet, right?
You have to order it. Baby also born in January I ordered and received the birth certificate around valentines day
They dont automatically send them out like they do the social security cards
Took about 4 weeks for me. Which was so stressful for insurance purposes
We haven't ordered it yet, but my other son's we were able to go pick up same day. OH though, not VA. Depends on your state and possibly county
I live in DC and took 1-2 weeks with expedited shipping
@Kyla nope! He's 2 and a half now and I still haven't needed it for anything 👍
It has been the weirdest process. My husband called ~2 weeks ago and they said they needed to speak to the mother. 🙃 So then I called a week later and they said they processed it the day my husband called (March 26) and that it would be sent by mail. They told me to give it 3-4 business days. It’s ridiculous. We want to start her baby passport.
Our hospital told us we could pick it up on either the town he was born or the town we live in, but that they wouldn’t call us to let us know it was ready. They said to wait 4 weeks and then call — then I picked it up. Then I made the passport appointment. It’s my first, so I didn’t realize… both parents have to come in person with their own documents in order to apply for the child.
Ours was mailed to us (NY)
I am a Virginia mama in the Richmond area. My boy was born on the 12 of January and we got the birth certificate after the social security card. Received birth cert on the 19th of March. I know there were major unusual delays in the Richmond area due to weather etc. You could always go to or call the office of vital statistics.

3 days. I had to pick it up in person from the health department. Im in GA
I live in SC and it took 2-3 weeks. I don’t think it’s normal to have to wait that long. Can you give them a call?
