Starts around age 2, it's 13.5 hours a week. Yes it's free :)
In school nursery is 2.5 hours a day from the term after their 3rd birthday. That is free. In some areas you can get funded childcare hours for children aged 2, which I think is 15 hours a week. But not everyone get that. Only if you live in a flying start area
The only way I could get clarity on what exactly I could get in the area I live in was to ring the council/ drop them an email. It really depends on what area you live in. I am in a flying start area. At first I thought I was only entitled to 10 hours at the local playgroup of which were 2.5 hours a day; either morning sessions or afternoon sessions. But then after contacting BCBC I found out that I could put my 3 year old into the local school based nursery for full days (8:50-3pm) five days a week for free. This is not the case with other mums I know so best to directly contact the council for a clear answer.
