Lamotrigine and breastfeeding

Hey there, does anyone have any experiences to share about breastfeeding while taking lamotrigine?

It's perfectly safe 🥰 I have fed my Jan 2023 baby up until her baby sister was born March 2024, ironically feeding March baby now. I tandem fed for the first 2½ weeks & no issues at all. I've been taking lamotrigine daily for coming up 10 years so it's definitely in my system 🤣 When my first weaned at 14½ months, she was absolutely fine. The only thing I was ever told is that some babies "might" get a little shakey from withdrawal once you stop

Thanks! Can I ask what your dosage was? I didn't breastfeed my 1st (Jan 23 baby too) because I was too scared. I had to go up to 1200mg daily by the end of the pregnancy to keep my blood level. Now I'm taking 450mg daily.

So each trimester i had to up it by 100mg (50mg & then another 50mg after 2 weeks of the beginning of the same trimester, then the same again when the next trimester began) as the further along the dosage just becomes weaker naturally. So I think by the times of their births I may have been on approx 700-800mg per day? I take 400mg daily now (with other meds). Awww lush!! Imagine that haha! Mine is in the terrible two's stages currently 🥲 But yeah, bearing in mind that lots of people take very different dosages for the amount that person needs for any reasons, I genuinely believe that the 450mg you're taking now is absolutely fine & nothing to have any worries about 😊 I was actually scared about feeding my first as well tbf & I'm not exaggerating when i say I asked at every obstetrics appointment after my scans if my meds are safe to breastfeed 😅 The only other thing I'll mention is always take your vitamins for you & baby as well while breastfeeding 🥰 unless you eat super healthy anyway, which i don't 🤭

And did you notice anything when you stopped about the babies behavior? I know, terrible tows 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

Nothing at all. She's always been herself when she was breastfeeding & the same after weaning. My youngest has no issues either while she is breastfed & hasn't shown any difference now that the feeding is also slowing down. Hahaha, it's wild!! 😳

Perfectly safe for my daughter. Planning to breastfeed with number 2. I’m now on 350mg compared to 250mg 5yrs ago and liquid x

I take 150mg in a morning and 200mg in an evening compared to 150mg BD before pregnancy. Levels were checked every 4 weeks and altered accordingly. Absolutely fine breast feeding and no changes with her behaviour now weaned ☺️

Thanks Ladies 💗 it's awesome being in this group and talk to other people in similar situations, I've never known any other epileptics before
