Did anyone else take multiple times for the spinal block to work?

I had a c section in July 2023 and they took 7 times to get me numb which caused nerve damage and lots of back pain. I had lots of physio and they said if I wanted to have another I might have to be put under general. Has anyone else experienced this? Thinking *hypothetically* about options if we had another.

They tried 12 times to get my spinal block into place and then a different member of staff 3 times which 3rd attempt worked never told me this xx

@Addelle wowsers you poor thing!! Did you experience back problems too?

@Nia yes defo back pain, I’m 6 month PP now xx

They tried 20 times and couldn’t get it - I ended up under general anaesthetic have horrendous back pain now !

Yeah they tried 4 or 5 times to get the spinal in which has caused weakness and pain to my hands and also pain in the soles of my feet. Almost like you have been walking on ice with no shoes or socks on all day. Sometimes it is so painful, it keeps me up at night and simple things like opening tins and doing up buttons takes me ages now. I am hoping it will come back in time. But they spoke at the time about putting me under general aneasthetic because I just wasn't responding well to the spinal xx

It took 5 times for my spinal to work, I ended up having to lay on my side but once I did lay on my side, it went in the first time xx

@Addelle congratulations did this happen with your first or second?

I have no idea how many times they tried for me but it was definitely more than 5! And then someone else took over and managed to do it first time! I’m 9 months PP now and I have had to have physio for back pain and it’s still bad now even though I have no physio sessions left x

@Nia 2nd xx

@Chloe oh god I'm so sorry. They said after the 7th they were going to put me under. 20 times is madness! Were you okay after the general? Did it take long to come round?

@Chloe they put me straight on general anaesthetic although it was an emergency c section and I feel no pain atall. Is there a reason they did not put you on general anaesthetic to avoid the back pain

@Emma I'm so sorry you went through that! It's so tough ❤️

@Nia I struggled with really low oxygen after wards for about 7 hours- my LG was born at 4:24 and I didn’t meet her until 6:30 xx

@Chloe that's really tough. I think that's the part that I find the most sad is missing out on seeing them when they're first born

@Nia yeah, it’s such a shame and my husband also couldn’t be there but the midwife was brilliant and took loads of photos and videos once she was stable x

@Chloe oh I completely forgot that partners can't be there either if it's general. That's lovely of the midwives. So your husband was able to have the baby once she was stable? Did they take her to the ward with you? Hope you don't mind all the questions!

I was stuck 5 or 6 times thank goodness I don't seem to be having any problems... besides my middle toes being numb. 🤷‍♀️

@Nia They brought both myself and the baby back to the labour room together, so my husband also didn’t meet her till like 6:30 xx of course not! Xx

8 times!

They had an intern do mine with my second child and he put it in the wrong vertebrae. It made one side burn and it was a horrible feeling all over. The doctor then took over and did it right. I have horrible back problems now. My daughter is 3. I cant imagine 20 times I don't even know how that's possible

Just had my c-section in the 16th April and it took 6 trials. Eventually, they gave up, due to my screaming that it felt like my left leg was going to burst! I developed loads of patches on my legs but they have decreased now, however I have numbness and tingling sensation in my right arm.

Yes! I had to have it done twice and I ended up having a spinal headache.

Just once. I’m a bit on disbelief that it would take more than twice, let alone TWENTY times!!!???

@Claire 20 is shocking!! I thought 7 times was bad

@J oh my it took a lot of attempts for me too but the the pains down my leg on failed attempts wow, I was ready to ask them to just put me to sleep, them shooting pains never wanna feel them again x

Had my second c section just over 2 weeks ago, the first time they got the spinal in 1st time straight away, this time they ended up trying 6/7 times before they then used an epidural (to help find the right place according to the anaesthetist) and then a spinal, so I ended up having both, but they said that was my last chance before being knocked out! xxx
