Cluster feeding

My 6 week old seems to only settle at night when eating “snacks”. He’ll sleep for about 3 hours at first then every 40 minutes to an hour he’s up and only settles with a boob, but definitely not taking a full feed. Is this “snacking” to sleep going to be a problem for future sleep or is this just a normal stage in development?

My baby girl will be six weeks old tomorrow, she does the same. She wakes moving her head to the side like she’s expecting the boob to be there already. And when I try to feed her, she sleeps oh in no time. More like she’s using the nipple as a pacifier but won’t take a real pacifier at that time.

All of my friends that let their babies snack multiple times a night definitely had trouble getting their babies to sleep even as far as 3+ years old. Not saying that’ll be the case for you, but it’s not something I would personally make a habit! Developmentally, he shouldn’t need to eat in the night for calories anymore and good sleep is sooo important for the both of you, so I’d look into other ways to soothe him back to sleep so that he doesn’t associate waking up all night with feeding 😊

@Abby good to know thank you!

You're getting 3 hours? I'm jealous! Mine is up every 1-2 all night long!

@Abby what 🤯 our march babies are about 8 weeks old at most! Its very typical to still need calories at night at this age.

@Melissa sorry! I meant if baby is over their birth weight and drinking enough calories during the day they don’t NEED to eat during the night 😊 Not that it’s not *normal* for babies to wake in the night at this age, of course it is! But from my experience, and what my pediatrician says, if you slowly lower the amount they get at night, they’ll drink even more during the day, allowing for even longer stretches during the night and less association with eating in the night. That has worked great for both of my babies! ♥️ every baby is different tho! (Also my March baby is 8 weeks already but you’re totally right if your babe is younger it’s still totally normal to drink in the night, I forget some people have way younger March babies lol)
