Nursing strike

10months old today and been on a nursing strike for 48hours now. Been EBF until this point, no bottles, no formula. Everything online suggests 2-4days to get back to normal but I’m worried (and emotional) that he’s finished feeding with no weaning off as such. Anyone else had anything similar, what was the outcome, did Baby get back to normal feeding or did your breastfeeding end? I’ve tried all the tricks to get him back on with no luck so far, and he won’t take what I’ve expressed 😩We’re also in the middle of settling into nursery so lots of changes happening 😢 Really appreciate to hear anyone else’s experience!

Hi, if my baby stopped feeding milk, I'd be taking him to the doctors. My lo is breastfed but take expressed bottles aswell, but milk is their main source of nutrition and in this weather lack of fluids could cause dehydration. Or are you saying he's stopped on the boob but drinking formula? Sorry I'm not sure. If he having formula just keep expressing and offering the boob. It could be a number of reasons, such as teething, unwell, nursery etc

Just offer a cup of milk / liquid as they may dehydrate

No we don’t do formula, he’s EBF. Nursing strikes are normal apparently so I’ve been giving him time to come back to ‘normal’. He’s still been taking water as normal and still having wet nappies so not overly concerned for dehydration. I’ve made a doctors appointment in the end just to check he doesn’t have anything going on with his throat causing him pain 🤷🏼‍♀️

My daughter did this but at 13 months and that was the end of her feeding. Before one I would be more concerned as with it being their main source of nutrition. If my twins stopped feeding I’d be worried because they aren’t eating solids that well but my daughter weaned so well I knew she was getting enough. Hope you get answers x

My son done this while he had a bad cough and cold. He was 9months. It was only 24hrs but I just kept offering him the boob and also offered water. If they are on solids also I added expressed milk into foods like porridge scrambled egg to try and hydrate him. Hope it settles soon my journey didn’t end 🥰

My middle went on nursing strike and I’ll never forget the panic / heartbreak but as soon as he went on strike he start up again (48hrs), it always coincided with sore throat or teething. My little girl (third) goes on feeding strike often 🤦‍♀️ again it’s always teeth related. She refuses a bottle so I offer expressed milk in a cup, give her lots of water and hydrating foods, cucumber, melon, etc and use expressed milk to make porridge / pancakes / mix it in sauces etc. go back to basics have lots of skin to skin, share a bath. Lactation consultants are full of ideas. Try not to stress of out pressure on your LO or yourself. It’s very rare they completely stop at 10months. X

Thanks @Rebecca and @Emma - it’s so reassuring to hear they eventually gave up their strike! He’s still holding strong on the no milk front but he’s been nestling in more today than yesterday. Drs confirmed nothing poorly with him so just down to teething and fingers crossed we get back to milk feeds when he’s ready. It’s absolutely heartbreaking though 😫
