Feeds

Hi all how do you know if your lo is waking out of habit or actually wants feed? My almost 5mo now bottle fed wakes up every 3 hours to the dot and has about half his feed after a cry. We’ve tried rocking him back to sleep sometimes it works and sometimes he’ll have a small feed and sleep. He’s weight is fine but unsure on the awakenings. Any thoughts please 🙂

I've wondered how do you know too

So babies don't learn habits (good or bad until 2 years old) which is why they recommend getting into routines early so that when they start learning boundaries etc that you've got stuff in place like cleaning teeth, bed time routines, eating at a table etc. This sounds like a regression. Especially if they were going longer before and its suddenly changed. Either that or it could be teething pain. They are the yep most common causes of interrupted sleep at this age. The only other thing I can think of is that baby actually needs more formula on the feed before bed if draining that bottle but doesnt sound like it from what you said. Sounds like the regression or teething in which cause if regression you just have to keep to the same routine and ride through it, if teething try calpol to help manage the pain x

I had this problem and looked into it. They can form sleep associations and in my case she didn’t know any better than to be fed back to sleep. So yes it was a habit in other words and can be common. Although at 5 months your baby more than likely will still need milk during the night so I’d ensure one good feed before bed and try rocking during the night to see if that works. Be consistent but if he still continues to cry I’d offer the bottle. It’s very tricky to know the difference. Do rocking first and feed second. Good luck!

@Emma ah thank you for the advice xx
