Mean doctors

Has anyone had a mean doctor with the nhs? I went to an appointment today and was mortified at how I was spoken to by a male out of hours gp - I get UTIs all through my pregnancy so just needed antibiotics again. Has anyone else experienced someone like this? I have never had a mean one before. I could’ve cried 🙈

I haven’t had an experience like this, but i’m 16 and pregnant. When i went for my first scan my sonographer was so rude and judgemental towards me. Any questions i asked she practically answered with an eye roll. I felt so singled out from everyone else there just because i was younger.

@jess oh bless your heart I’m so sorry she was like that with you ❤️

Yes. When i had the coil i was in agony and could feel it in my cervix. Spoke to a male GP who was an absolute pig and told me Im imagining it and to wait 2 weeks for my smear when they can 'show you its in the right place'. Next day it rejected and I bled all over my bestfriends bathroom floor. Had to go to gp to ensure it hadnt caused any permanent damage to my cervix or womb. 🙃 Male GPs when it comes to female anatomy are absolutely clueless in my experience. There are a few who are more sympathetic.

Yup I had an awful GP once! I asked her ‘what are the contraindications with that medication?’ And she just went ‘oooh big word, you think you’re fancy’ 😅😅!!! I changed GP surgeries that same day and so glad I did! I’m sorry you were treated badly, it’s awful at any time but even worse if you’re already feeling rough! You could consider contacting the manager of the surgery or the PALS department if it was at a hospital to make a complaint as they shouldn’t get away with that x

I remember when I took my son to the doctors for a cough, the doctor I saw was so rude. Tried to tell me there was nothing wrong, didn't listen to his chest or anything and then made a comment how it was obvious he was my first child and I needed to be less anxious. I made another appointment the next day asking to see a different doctor. Turns out he had a respiratory infection and needed antibiotics🙃

@Katie omg! That’s literally one of the things he said, I have chronic UTIs whilst pregnant, I got one again so went back to out of hours gp for antibiotics and he asked me if I’ve always been this anxious or if it’s just whilst I’m pregnant. He also asked my partner if he understood what I was saying? Wouldn’t speak directly to me just went through my partner 🙈

@Hannah they never say any of that to a man though! I've been to a lot of my partners doctors appointments (and some of them have been for some really stupid stuff) and never once has a doctor told him he needs to stop being so anxious. It's actually such a joke

I’m not sure it’s a gender thing. Not in my experience anyway. Plenty of rude female staff in NHS. I would say, since being pregnant, the doctors I have had, have been really nice and caring (when I eventually got to see them). Most of which have been male. Most of the midwives and nurses (all women) have been pretty rude and dismissive.

I work in NHS complaints in primary care and unfortunately it’s so common to see complaints about the attitude of doctors. There have been a lot of cases when it’s a male doctor who is really dismissive to a woman

@Reema I didn’t realise it was so common, I’ve honestly never had a rude or condescending doctor before this they’ve all been lovely, what a shame
