Not sure exactly what they will ask because I was referred for other reasons but in terms of BMI being a 'risk' (rolls eyes) please read advice from Sarah Wickham https://www.sarawickham.com/ before your appt. She is an absolute queen for advocating, giving evidence based evaluation and busting myths around induction and BMI being a risk factor. Hope that helps 🙂
I had one in my last pregnancy they just run through healthy eating, the risk of pregnancy diabetes and other health problems, and they spoke about the growth scans i was asked to have because of it x
Mine just spoke to me about the pregnancy, the risk of preeclampsia and that’s why I was on aspirin. And then asked if it was okay to refer me to a dietitian. Said I’d have growth scans and said he was happy to not see me again til I’m 36 weeks as long as everything stays the same x
I was a high BMI mum, higher dose of folic acid, aspirin, gestation diabetes test, extra growth scan. Had a great birth, spontaneous quick labour. Midwives were happy for me to have the pool if I wanted it (but I didn’t). I would say that he had a tongue tie and that is common with the folic acid.
@Emily aw I’m glad to hear your labour went so well! Did they say that you could give birth in the pool or just use it for pain relief? X
@Georgie I think for pain relief, but didn’t take them up. My body shouted to me to get on all fours but I couldn’t keep position so ended up on my back which was my only regret!
Thank you all soooo much. My BMI is only just over the threshold but I knew it would be and that’s fine, just have that ‘fat camp’ fear of what it could be like going forward. Really appreciate everyone’s comments. So @Emily is a water birth sometimes not recommended if you have a high BMI? So pleased you had a positive birth and you and baby are ok 🤍 xx
@Jami I’ve been advised I’m not allowed to give birth in the pool bc of my bmi xx
@Georgie oh really? What’s the rational they’ve given you for that? X
Their rationale can be if they need to lift you out they won’t be able to. I think that does depend on overall weight tho.
@Jami they’ve said bc my pregnancy is already high risk and I’m about chunky they wouldn’t be able to lift me out 🤣 fair but still gutted about it xx
Urgh that’s a bit meh isn’t it. I guess depending on actual weight but I’m pretty sure with a birth partner present and staff they could get someone out to a higher weight than they allow, and also there’s often signs before an emergency happens (I’m a nurse) so would most likely be able to get the woman out of the pool safely before anything may happen. Urgh so much stigma and barriers with a ‘high BMI’, I’m dreading it all 🙈 thank you for your replies though I appreciate it xx
Hey! I’m in the exact same boat and have no idea what to expect 😩 so following this! Xx
