Why would I be referred to obstetrics for?

This is my second pregnancy, was no complications with my first. I wasn't told I was going to be referred? Is it because I had a emergency section? I've had a few miscarriages? I have a potential autoimmune disease (which is still waiting for actual testing)? I'm so confused

I've been referred to obstetrics because I had a c section and my son was born with a genetic illness (that doesn't affect my current pregnancy). Generally it's just if there's anything that makes you higher risk they will put you down for an obstetrics referral to talk you through mitigating any potential additional risks.

@Harriet ah that makes sense. I had no idea until I've just checked the NHS app

It could be a range of all the issues placing you at a higher risk. It’s also a good thing to have an OB look over your case, regardless of the reason. I’d call the hospital and ask, they’ll be able to help.

I was referred because I had a previous c-section. They just discuss options for your next birth x

I had an appointment with obstetrics at 20 weeks. When I arrived, the obstetrician asked me why I wanted to speak with them/why i was there. I said I was there because I received an appointment letter, and neither of us could work out why I had been referred 😂😅. She was lovely, but yeah, still don’t know why I was referred!!

Yeah will be if you’re at higher risk of something x

I’ve been referred because at my very first scan (privately) they saw a cyst on my left side. I then informed the midwife in the first consultation and got a sent an app letter not long after. I have PCOs and previously removed a polyp, therefore it made sense for a referral. However, I have had a smooth pregnancy so far (currently 21 weeks). It’s a personal decision, but I prefer to be monitored more often so for me it was a relief. Although, it can be confusing if you haven’t been told prior to receiving your appointment. Hope it goes well 😊
