Formula/ready made feeding/digestion

My baby is now 5 weeks old and weighs 7lb. She was born at 37+2 5lb 1oz. She’s feeding 3oz every 2-3 hours but 4oz is too much for her. Typically we haven’t had the easiest of feeding journeys and have found it hard to bring up her wind. We have tried Infacol which brought up her wind but gave her tummy ache every time we used it (had screaming for hours), Colief which worked better but still wasn’t ideal and was such a faff with preparing the bottles. We are now using small amounts of gripe water but this has caused her to poo to become very runny and much more frequent (every nappy change!) compared to the once or twice per day that she was doing. In the last few days, she has become very noisy after feeding, gurgling tummy, lots of windy noises when she breathes etc and also very squirmy and unsettled. I’m using the green Cow and Gate 1 powdered formula but have had problems with her wind etc since moving from the ready made in hospital to the powder. I’ve been advised not to change her milk but I’m running out of things to try for her. My first child had a milk intolerance and didn’t put on weight and it was obvious very quickly that he needed something different. My second child was on the hungry baby milk very quickly. This baby, is gaining weight well and is generally really content other than the wind/feeding/milk issues. She’s also not that sickly. Anyone have any advice? I’ve been and bought ready made milk so I can give her a few days on that instead of powder to see if she’s any better with the wind to remove the need for Gripe water which is causing the pooping! Parenting is hard!

Stick to ready mades much easier to digest until she’s out of the newborn phase !! Find my boy is much less squirmy and windy when not taking powder x

@Anisha ♡ I swirl her bottles in a circle of that makes sense so there is already minimal air bubbles. She seems to be doing much better on the ready made milk though 😊

@Rhiannon we have done 24hrs on the ready made now. She’s drinking more, burping better and less poops! She’s also a lot more settled and there’s been no need for gripe water! Taking it as a win and will keep her on it until she’s 8 weeks I think then try formula again. Thank you x

@Zoe I knew I wasn’t going mad I defiantly saw a difference ! I know there expensive but it’s worth it x

@Rhiannon it’s crazy how much difference it has made already. I had no idea what else to try but hopefully this works for a while x

Hi ladies, just jumping on this post, I literally could have written it myself!! We are losing the will to live our little girl has been fine on powdered formula til about 3 days ago and now she just seems so uncomfortable when feeding! @Zoe is your little one still better on the ready made? Think we will give it a go on the next feed x

@Chloe hi, yes she is still on the ready made. She is much more settled and pooping regularly again now. I’ve also not needed to her anything else to help with the wind as it’s been easier to bring up. She is drinking more often though as I don’t think the ready made sits as heavy as the formula but we have just done two nights of where she has only woken up once for a night feed (not sure if it’s coincidental to being on ready made or not, but I’ll take it!) Ive given her one 3oz bottle of formula in the last couple of days and as soon as she had it, she was squirmy, whiny and unsettled (regretted giving it to her instantly!) We have now decided that we will keep her on the ready made till 8 weeks and then transfer back to formula, but will change from cow and gate to aptimal. Have you given your little girl ready made? Have you seen a difference? x

@Zoe thanks so much for your reply! Glad to hear your little girl has improved! We’ve been on ready made formula now for about 24 hours and I have definitely noticed a difference. I have kept her on the infacol anyway as I figured it can’t do her any harm! She’s still not 100% but hoping after a few days we’ll see a real improvement. We’ve noticed she is taking slightly more of the ready made, as you say it must be slightly lighter. Have you been warming it up or just giving it at room temp? Xx
