My midwife recently told me that the advice of “keep air out of the teet” is now redundant and that you should only half fill the teet with milk, to ensure they have to work harder to drink and not just gulp it down and get sick. I have to watch my boy very carefully as he does start getting excited and chugging….and I have to give him a break otherwise he throws up. I also do nappy change mid feed to a) calm him beforehand so he doesn’t scream, and b) give him a break. It could be the shape of the teet on the ready made bottle. It’s not very “nipple” shaped on the aptemil if I remember correctly. My boy is sicking up quite a bit with his formula feeds (he has 3 overnight otherwise he’s on the boob) but I think it’s normal as he drinks alot more. Lots of breaks and winding helps. And I’m using the Philips avent bottles with a filter thing in that helps with milk flow apparently.
@Rachel thank you! Currently using tommee tippee ones and have also tried NUk (but they went weird in steriliser) and doc brown too . The air out of teet thing is tricky as we try to pace feed (although it’s hard on tommee tippee because they’re so wide) and we’ve been told that sucking sound if it’s half full is air and makes wind worse :( There seems to be so much conflicting advice from experts! I’ll try your method and maybe look at those bottles too! Winding is also tricky - if you have tips for that too please let me know ☺️
@Lauren you’re absolutely right. I’ve even had different midwives and health visitors tell me different things. I’m afraid I probably don’t have good advice on winding as my boy is rather good at producing a big belch. Usually I just have to sit him up and with my palm on his back just gentle help him straighten up (he’s still rocking that newborn scrunch). Tilting back and forth or gently moving his upper body separate from the bottom helps - aside from the usual forms of winding
