Is spit up driving anyone else crazy

A bit of backstory here, my LO he is 4.5 months now was born at 6.4 and then lost a lot of weight went down to 5.12, and all the doctors just kept telling me he is on a smaller percentile he is a small baby etc etc. I couldn't breastfeed him (no milk) so he has been exclusively formula fed for the past 4.5 months. He is now taking 6 oz every 3-4 hours but the spit up is insane - maybe it's normal but just seems insane to me? I just want every oz of formula to be in him without him spitting it up because i get scared it will affect his weight. Sometimes he spits up 1-2 times per feed and sometimes it's like 4-6 times. It drives me crazy and I don't know if maybe I am overfeeding my son. Sometimes I try to force him to finish his bottle because of the doctor's scare that he is underweight (even though he is over 14lbs now). I think this whole percentile weight thing has traumatized me to the point where my whole day revolves around how much he is eating and then how much he spits up. Any and all kind words appreciated! 🙏🏻

Yes! We went through 4 burps cloths the other day! Could you talk to your pediatrician about changing type of formula or brand?

@Kelly he loves his formula - i think i might be overfeeding him

I’m sorry this is happening to you but do you think it could be the formula brand you are using?.. ): and after his feedings do you keep him sitting upright instead of laying him down quickly? Bc I have to feed my baby and wait an extra 10-20 minutes of him sitting upright instead of laying him down due to his spit ups and I swear I thought he had silent reflux but my man kept calling me crazy😅 but literally every feed if we put him down he cries .. and now he’s gotten better as well due to him being on kendamil goat milk formula! We had to switch 3 different formulas to find the right one 🥺.

My 4 month old is a spit up kid through and through too! My first never really did it so it’s caught me off guard with this baby. He sounds like he’s gained a good amount of weight since being born I wouldn’t worry too much! Mine was born at 11 lbs 5oz and is now only 15 lbs 6oz for reference.

@Ally we went through 4 formula brands until he went on Kendamil Classic and he loves it has been gaining weight nicely when he was eating 5 oz every 3-4 hours there wasn't a lot of spit up but then when i upped it to 6oz i see spit up almost at every meal (except at night when he is sleepy). Also he is a VERY active baby he gulps his milk down without taking a breath - I try to pry it away to burp him but he starts crying. Then after eating he just wants to flail around like a little lobster and that's when he also spits up.

@Maria possibly, i would also recommend pace feeding

@Maria if he’s comfortable to finish 5oz then stay there for now but wait 5-10 minutes after that feed and see if he will take the last 6 ounce if not then it’s okay save it for another 20/30 minutes and try again and if he takes a little bit and doesn’t finish the rest then just leave it. Or if he finishes it then great! 😊 That’s what I’m doing right now with my 3 month old baby! And he gulps too quickly too with his bottle so when I notice him gulping too fast and not breathing I pull the bottle away and let him breath for a second and then put it back into his mouth before he cries and just continue doing that till he’s feeding calmly then I let him finish the rest without stoping and when he’s done that’s when I start burping him bc I noticed if I burp him in between he’s feedings he starts crying:(..

But spit ups are also normal too!! My baby spit ups a little bit but not too much!✨🥺 s

Could be reflux? Go to your doctors and they could give you advice x

My baby spits up on everyone. No one’s shirt is safe lol but my doctor said it’s normal and as long as she’s gaining weight and not refusing her bottle or seems uncomfortable while eating then nothing to worry about

our doctor recommended, feeding less but more often! they eventually grow out of it so it’s not a forever thing! mine would spit up like crazy, turned 5 months & it’s noticeably less!

@Lindsey yes, i think that's what I read as the early range for when their systems mature enough to keep it down better!

@Elena lol yep mine will do the same!

@Lindsey mine eats and runs the marathon at the same time lol i think thats why he spits up cuz he is constantly in motion

Hey so my baby went through the same thing, we thought she had reflux and took her to our doctor who prescribe infant gaviscon ( in UK based not sure what you have in the US) and I never started it as hesitated to start drugs on a baby so small, fast forward to now she is 5m and has grown out of it! So her spit up was normal thank god i never started medication You can consider different formula but usually most babies grow out of it Make sure you burp baby often during feeds

Mine definitely has a tendency to spit up too! He is breastfed however (sometimes I lump and give him breastmilk through a bottle) I always try to burp every couple of oz and have him sit up during the feeding and for at least 10 minutes after to keep the milk from coming back up. I will also say not to freak out too much about percentiles. My little sister was in the 5th percentile her whole life and even now she’s 17 and hasn’t hit 100 pounds yet. People’s metabolism is different so I wouldn’t freak out. If he’s 14 pounds he’s not very under. Just make sure he’s hitting weight requirements for vaccines(if you’re vaccinating) they might not inform you that it’s weight based and just give it to you if you’re okay with it.

Ok, so I see three things to address here. 1. Spitting up, 2. "Finish the bottle" 3. Low weight percentile. 1.Spitting up is pretty normal. As someone said-no shirt is safe around my kid. But this is also the age when babe starts to understand they need to burp or spit up. That flailing you see can be a sign of that. Another couple months and they will be able to burp themselves and regulate that better. Anyways-the valve that leads to the stomach is still closing, which is why babies have acid reflux and spit up all the time. If he can do 5 oz without spitting up, you might want to stay there and just make the feeds a bit more frequent or do a dessert feed. 24-32 oz in 24 hours is a normal amount of formula. 2. Don't try to push finishing a bottle. It doesn't allow you kid to listen to their hunger cues and figure out what fullness means. This can create overeating in the future. (Definitely something seen more with formula babies) ~~~

~~ 3. Low percentiles are ok. This took a lot of explaining for my husband to be ok with this for our first kid, so let me try to help you here. Instead of looking at percentiles and weights, look for them to follow their growth curve. Kids should stay around the same percentiles as they grow. A jump from 12% to 32% is not really a good thing. Percentiles are where a kid is in terms of weight compared to peers. Weight itself is not really a big deal unless they are in the really low percentiles or the really high ones. Think of adults. Some of us are tall and lean, some of us are a little rounder. Even if everyone is fit, you ~~

~~~still have different shapes, sizes, and builds. So do kids. If you are worried about this, instead of trying to get them to always eat more, go in for some extra weight checks and get the percent checked. As long as they are following their curve they are ok. (If you don't fix this mindset now, you are going to have a really really hard time when they are a toddler and eat only a cracker for the entire day.)
@Katherine thanks for explaining! doctors dont explain percentiles at all
@Katherine one cracker for entire day?? oh boy i need to really prep myself
😂 yes. 1 cracker ..a goldfish cracker, not even a saltine! That was one I stance, but he has done a yogurt pouch (3oz) for a day more than a handful of times. And it's really frustrating because if I offer a meal and he's not into it, I will usually do a back up meal for him...but sometimes he won't even touch the backup and I know it's food that he likes.
Try not to force him. I did this and gave my baby a bottle aversion and she stopped eating completely and lost a bunch of weight. She is just now coming out of it after I had to buy a program and send her to feeding therapy. Let baby lead the feeds and do not pressure baby even a little bit. It’s not worth it- it’s hell dealing with an aversion
