Curious

Last week I was diagnosed with GD, I am 26 weeks pregnant today. I’ve been on with reading my blood sugars 4 times a day, I have had the odd spike but mostly kept readings good(green). My first reading on a morning, before I have eaten anything, is always above 5.3, not crazy high but over 5.3. I was told that this was normal as it’s a “fasting reading”, so haven’t been worried by it. Today I was told by a nurse that I was told wrong, and she wants me to start metaformin once a day, as my other readings are ok. Can you tell me what you have been advised / told please ? PS I feel overwhelmed and feel like my body is failing my baby even when I am making the best and most healthy choices :(

I’m afraid you were told wrong to begin with which is rubbish. Your fasting needs to be below 5.3 and 1 hour after food should be under 7.8. The fasting one is notoriously more difficult because it’s less controllable e.g it’s not mostly about what you have eaten before. Some swear by having a high protein snack at night before bed can help but that’s not a given. A lot do need metformin just for the fasting result and it’s not their fault! Just hormones/placenta. Well done for the other readings though!

I 100% agree with jess that's what I was told fasting below 5.3 and hour after food should be under 7.8 and I was diagnosed with GD last week too hun it's so much to take in and change these things xxx

My blood sugar after breakfast this morning was 11.5 which was so high but I'm in hospital and been given meds for the baby and that could of made it spike xxx

@Jess thank you for your comment. Such a shame I was told wrong. I haven’t seen anyone yet including the dietitian so I literally am winging it and following recipes I find online. Thank you 🤍

@mammy to 8 angels 👼 it’s very overwhelming, I feel like I have no energy/am exhausted, plus don’t really know what I’m doing as I haven’t had any appointments to support me yet ! Xx thank you for commenting x

@Emily to be honest…. The hospital dietician was not very helpful for me. Half the things she said would be ok spiked me lol. Everybody is so individual - what works for one won’t work for another it’s bizarre. Look on https://www.gestationaldiabetes.co.uk for ideas!

@Jess thank you xx yes this is what I’ve been following! You’re right though, everyone’s different. My body can’t tolerate potatoes at all, no matter how small lol xx

@Emily my body doesn't like bread at all it's OK we're all experience this it's so new and I have 2 diabetic ladies and they told me everything I need to know darl and they are fantastic xxx

@mammy to 8 angels 👼 thank you I appreciate it xxx

Am I more likely to be induced / have a c section now then ? X

I have just been put on metformin they have said I will be induced at 39 weeks but if I need to go onto insulin it would be 38 weeks I really didn't wanna be induced. They said at my 36 week scan will discuss birth option if he continues to grow normal c section is net required x

@Emily hey love! I was told by my GD midwife that the induction/section would only be if baby is measuring on the large side. I was diagnosed last week with GD after a week if finger pricking (I cant have the drinl test due to previous bariatric surgery)… I had a growth scan yesterday and baby is measuring completely average (for now!) Xx

Your fasting reading can spike for a number of reasons. I was told I can’t let mine be 5.3 or above. It could be your hormones, if your eating too late or too early so if your eating at say 5/6 then nothing and your testing at say 7/8 you’ve gone too long without food and it can spike you. I was told to snack around 8 nuts or a few biscuits for waking up at 7. Most of my spikes are due to hormones. I was on metformin but came off and now I’m insulin only. But I was always told since last pregnancy as soon as you start medication they tend to induce. But if your trust offers extra scans you can see yourself the development of your baby and if you have no concerns you could push back. My hospital do scans at 28/32/36 I’m having a planned section this time so I will be in at 39 but because I’m insulin only it depends on the baby as it can make bigger babies apparently x

I have had odd higher readings - I think mine were caused by too many carbs. My mum did me a buffet 😂😂 and was munching over a few days! The diabetes team suggested I start Metformin - I decided to monitor myself for a bit longer first. My blood sugars have been fine since. All the scans I have had have been normal weight - will find out this week whether they want to induce me or not early. I was told with GD they like you to have the baby before 40 weeks. And in terms of readings I was told Before breakfast less than 5.3 1 hr after meals less than 7.8 x
