Midwife’s phone number?

I don’t know if this is a stupid question or not, however who am I supposed to call and when? People say if you’re concerned to “call your midwife” how do I do this? Where can I find my midwife’s number? Is it for just one midwife or the whole team in my area? Honestly not a clue 😂

Depending on your location it's just your clinic where you see the midwife. Or an assessment clinic at your local hospital. I'm in Australia and we have a women's assessment clinic that we call for any concerns

There should be a list of numbers in your pack they gave you at your 8 week appointment xx

They normally give you a book which has a number for maternity triage on it for your local hospital. (You could also find this on your hospitals website) You can call them if you have reduced movements, anything unusual going on etc. when I had reduced movement during my pregnancy I called them and I went in to hospital to be monitored to check me over. If you just want everyday advice you can contact your community midwives, I used to be able to email and text mine but I know it’s different for different areas. Ask your community midwife at your next app for contact details if you are unsure. Also it’s not a stupid question! Sometimes it feels like we are expected to just know things as ftm 😂 x

In your hospital green notes, usually on the front page, there’s a little sticker with all the numbers for you to call. How many weeks are you? Do you know who your community midwife is?

Hi! I’m in West Sussex UK, I don’t have physical notes or anything. My midwife gave me her work number at my first appointment as they are based at my GP, she WhatsApp’s me usually or I call my triage team at the hospital where the maternity unit is. The full set of numbers is on the Badger App, I’d recommend signing up to it if you haven’t already you usually get access after your first midwife appointment x

I don't have a specific midwife I can contact. I don't even have a midwife hub I can contact. My only option is calling triage on labour ward after 18 weeks

@Charley who did you see for your 16W midwife appointment? You need to self-refer to your community hub (or possibly your GP if they have a midwife attached)

@Madeleine so I got a leaflet that says “movements matter” with some numbers on it, I also got a thing to sign into a MyHealth app. Then it just gives me a number for the early pregnancy unit and then the labour ward, and then for the Coventry community midwife’s, I’m guessing that’s it? I thought I’d get the number for like one person but maybe not

I also received zero info about who to call. I called the midwife reception once at the antenatal clinic but they were useless so I've just been using my GP for questions.

If you're from England, the general midwife number is in the red book.

@Alexandra my baby is already born. But in my area, there is no direct contact to midwives outside of your booked routine appointments, if you want to speak to someone you have to phone triage, but that's only available to you after 18 weeks. Before that it's the GP. There is literally no way to phone or text or contact a midwife outside of your appointments, you can only speak to admin staff who can book you an appointment

@Charley oh wow! Where did your appointments for the midwife take place? Is it at a community hub, GP or hospital? Mine are at a community hub so I just ring the hub if I have a question

It’s different in every area. In my area I have the number for the midwife team and I’m assigned to one specific midwife but I still haven’t met her lol.

It's usually in your notes and there'll be a general number you can call for advice or support.

@Alexandra all over the place 😆 not at the GP, not at my local community hub. I've been to 4 different hospitals/community hubs/family centres over the course of my pregnancy and since the baby was born. I'm in Cornwall, and this is pretty standard practice round here due to availability

@Charlotte I’m in wales so it may be different but I had a booklet that had all my notes in it from my first appt and had to take it to every appointment and inside it had a list of the midwives in my area numbers including an on call number too xx

@Charley that’s crazy how much it differs across England! I’m really shocked. What a postcode lottery there truly is in the NHS 😩😩

@Natalie I haven’t got a red book, I don’t think everyone gets one

@Charlotte are you still pregnant? If so that could be why you don’t have a red book yet, I got my red book when my HV first came after the birth which was after I had been discharged from the midwife x

@Madeleine ohhh okay, yeah I’m 18 weeks x
