Speech delay

Hi all! Just looking for some advise and maybe other mom’s that are on the same boat. My son will be 3 on the 31st December. He does speak, and constructs simple sentences. But only me and my husband understand most of what he says. Not because it’s not understandable, but because he still uses odd words like ‘Yammy’ to say anything related to eating and drinking. He still generalises a lot and uses the same word for a lot of things. And he does not use connecting words at all. He has a lot of trouble repeating back to me anything that I ask of him. He was already seen by a speech therapist and had his hearing checked and it’s all good. Not really sure if there’s anything else I should do, or if I should just accept that he is a late bloomer. Anyone else in the same boat? Any advice?

On the same boat as you, my daughter is saying more and more everyday but generally says sentences such as take a bath or wash your hands etc. it’s never a full conversation we can have. It breaks my heart that I can’t speak to her fully :( speech therapist told me it can be genetic or she can just have a speech spurt by 3/3.5 years. Has your little one been seen by the paediatrician? Sometimes it can be there social skills etc

@Char yes, he has been seen by the doctors as well. All good. His communication and social skills are all really good. And he is improving. He is saying more words every day. But when I look at other kids the same age and even younger, they can have full conversations. They built full sentences. And my son doesn’t do that. Our biggest problem is that he gets really really frustrated when we don’t understand him :/ and it really breaks my heart and I don’t know how to help him more.

Hey hun, I had simular with my son... He didn't start talking properly until he was over 3...i was so worried about it all and the health visor made me worry and said to wait until he started nursery and they would assess and make referrals if needed, but he literally started talking more like a month before hand so he was around 3 year 5 months ish... He is now 5 and jesus wish he would shut up 🤦🏼‍♀️🤣 some take longer than others just encourage him to talk and if he asks for something get him to repeat the word 2 or 3 times and then give it him, it's just talking, talking and talking to them and getting them to converse back they will do it... I've had no issues with my daughter she will be 3 next month and she talks extremely well 🤦🏼‍♀️ too well tbh 😂 so don't worry he will get there

If you don't know what he is saying, get him to show you, just say 'can you show mummy? Point to it' and let him guide you and when you know repeat what it is and say 'can you say....' and make it a big deal when he gets close to saying it ♥️
