Talking

Is everyone’s baby’s talking? My daughter says mum and dad that’s it. Getting really worried and fed up with criticism from others

My little one only say dada and this. I’m trying with all I have not to worry or compare, but it’s so difficult! I always find myself searching stuff online 😞

My little girl says mama, dada, baba and ta but chooses when she wants to say it 😂 She makes noises like ‘tss’ but that’s about it. I’m trying not to worry too much as well but they do say it isn’t anything to be concerned about until 18 months.

It’s so hard not to compare. Every child is different I get that but when you have family/friends in your ear saying they should be talking 50 words etc it’s hard! She’s 16 months next week and I am so worried

Mine only says hiya and ma when he is reaching for something he wants. He definitely understands a lot though. We have the health visitor on Thursday, will see what she says.

In the exact same situation! Trying not to worry just yet because he defo understands everything x

Mine just makes animal sounds 😅

My boy says "num num" when hungry 90% of the time, the occasionally mama and dada but otherwise just complete babble. He understands a few things, like upies, water, bath and snoozies but can't say them. I asked at nursery when I should start to worry about speech delay as I know of so many kids who have lots of words and she said dont worry until 2yrs. They go through some big leaps in the next 9ish mths (my boy is 15mth) and he will suddenly start getting the hang of new stuff seemingly overnight.

Some kids walk , some kids talk. It's very hard not to compare. But I have seen kids who walk soon, starts to talk late and vice versa. My baby is not walking yet, he talks well according to his age. I am worried him not walking, he walks well with support though.

Mine says words but he’s far from “taking” so he’ll say dada and mama and bath and the word up and he’ll mimic animal sounds when asked “what does the —— say” otherwise it’s just incoherent babbles

As far as I know signs and sounds also count, and so long as they are using something deliberately in context they don't have to say it perfectly (like mine says 'cah' for 'cat'). Plus they know a lot more than they say. Mine says Mama, Dada, more, cat, bird, dog, ball, baba, door, bye bye, awww and gone so can speak 12 but signs more, cat, bird, bye bye, squirrel, lion, finished, full up, milk, tired, surprised, worried, spider, nappy, no, cuddle, 'gentle hands', and does the signs to wind the bobbin, incy wincy, twinkle twinkle, round and round the garden, and does beep beep, moo, tweet tweet and roar sounds, so actually uses about 37 words/ sounds/ signs, and understands a lot more. Don't think it has to be perfect to count!

@Molly she won’t even make animal sounds 😬

She understands everything you ask her to get but won’t talk. Won’t do signs to nursery rhymes etc

Mine says mama, dada, nana meaning banana, hiya, ta meaning thankyou, Nah and gentle. He understands other things though but just can’t say them yet. He makes a sound when things are hot and can do the signs to wind the bobbin song x

Wdym criticism? People judge you because your 15 month old don’t speak, yet?😐😐😐 this is new😅 don’t worry! It’s very normal. My son only says mama, dada and Daisy (the dog) and he says words after me sometimes if I say it couple of times, but he doesn’t memorise them, so yeah.

@Shruthi oh, it makes sense. My son started walking at 11 months, but only says 3 words that I can understand.

My son just says papa (dad), mama, ba (grandma) and dei dei (give). I have tried to teach him more stuff but he simply doesn't want to. He only seems to say things when he wants to or needs to, not interested at all in repeating

@𝐼𝑜𝒶𝓃𝒶 the amount of people I’ve had tell me she should be talking loads more/sentences is crazy. First child so I thought she was progressing perfectly. In laws are the worst criticising every single thing she and I do

@incog that’s awful.

Mine little girl has quite a few words compared to others her age but then she walked really late compared to them. She is still not properly on her feet. They all focus on different things at times and all her there in the end. It’s hard not to compare… we all do it I think.

If it makes you feel any better, my little one only says Daddy and "Ma" when she wants me, but you can tell she is taking it all in and she understands when we say things like "find your ball", "tidy up" etc. I didn't start talking til I was 2 and then when I was in school I got told off for talking too much 😂 so I think my little one is going to be the same. My in-laws criticise me a lot too, I even got judgy comments about not giving my little one a dummy 😂 x

My little girl only says , mama , dada , hiya and nana. Then everything else she just shouts a a an and points! I’m sure my oldest daughter was talking by this age 😳😩 x

@Becky I don’t know why some in laws are like it. I envy people that have nice, caring, helpful ones 😂

Thankyou ladies, it’s nice to know I’m not alone

I rang the HV last week as I was concerned (we have "woof woof" "muma" "Baba" (papa) and "dar" (star). They were not worried at all, I think 18 months and they might begin to take an interest but if the child can hear (responds to their name) and is babbling then they don't consider them to be behind. Everything I can see online suggests that by the age of 2 a child might be stringing two words together e.g. "I do", "want more". Ignore everyone who says otherwise. Memory is a funny thing and people do like to think that their own children were geniuses!
