Anyone else really loathe eating out pregnant?

It’s my birthday next week and all I want to do is sit at home, because going out to eat (something I normally absolutely love) has turned into such an area of stress for me. Having to interrogate ingredients, deal with staff who don’t know what pasteurised means (not their fault ofc) and double check they’ve given me the virgin cocktail and not added booze by mistake really sucks all the fun out of everything. I have gone zero alcohol across the board so I won’t even have sauces with wine. Has anyone had a birthday while pregs and what did you do?

I’ll be honest no it’s made no difference to me I still eat everything I would usually eat 😕

I found out I was pregnant 2 days after my birthday so I'm missing out I guess.. But I have had meals out and restaurants should be very wary of giving pregnant women stuff they can't have. That's a law suit waiting to happen haaha

I've had success with asking stuff like 'what on your menu is safe for pregnant women' and in almost all cases there's either an allergen specialist or the chef will know how to amend menu items

Wrt virgin cocktails.. I always specify ✨ absolutely no alcohol as I'm pregnant ✨ when ordering and that also usually helps

Not my birthday but I’ve had a lot of work events where it can be stressful, especially with drinks. I just order water, lemonade etc as I also panic about them not hearing the virgin/ non alcoholic part 😅 It’s your birthday so do what you enjoy. Otherwise go somewhere you’re comfortable with, and research the menu before hand x

No really only in that I can’t eat as much as I would like haha 🤣 or pair it with a nice Rioja but other than that can’t say it’s been a issue x

I don't drink alcohol anyway so no change there... but with food, I basically just don't order rare meat or sushi (except for before I realised I was pregnant 🤦‍♀️) - apart from that I just crack on as usual x

I spent my birthday throwing up in bed 🫠. Go out and enjoy yourself!! I wish I could have

I’m the same as @Lisa, just can’t each much now and get sad about it 😂

I think this is mostly anxiety you’re feeling. Unless you’re going out on the town and pub crawling I don’t see there being an issue. Eat what you want and drink what you like. Go to somewhere you know and enjoy. It won’t harm baby or you and keep telling yourself that! I still have a glass of wine when I go for food and enjoy it without concern or worry, I ask for a very small glass filled with lemonade and make it last to the last drop 🤣. If going out on your birthday is something you’ve always loved don’t make pregnancy a reason for you to now despise it because you’re anxiety is creating adrenaline within your body. Go out enjoy yourself, tell yourself the food you order or the drinks you have will not harm baby or you and let them oxytocin’s run through your body. Positive affirmations 1000% will help with the lead up to your birthday. You’ll enjoy yourself and baby will feel you enjoying yourself xx

Often when I go out I would have a steak, so I have been sad that I can't have that as I wouldn't want it well done. However, for the most part I've still been able to enjoy. When booking I often state I'm pregnant and need space otherwise you can end up on a table too tight to get out of! Nothing worse than having to stick your bump in people's faces whilst squeezing between tables 🤣. I haven't bothered about alcohol in sauces generally as it will be cooked off. I find there's too many things I don't enjoy so much anymore that I'm trying to make the best of it!!

I celebrated my birthday last weekend 8 months pregnant lol. I went to a nearby Christmas market for like 10 minutes then went home and ordered a dominos 😅 vegged out in my comfies watching Christmas films. I personally don’t have the energy right now to do restaurants, so that was my choice! Just do what you want to do, you’re growing a human ❤️

@Dominique I’ve actually had a few bad experiences with this (for eg, I went to a Michelin starred restaurant that we’d had booked since before I found out I was pregnant. We told them in advance I was pregnant and was assured they could serve an adapted menu for me so we kept the reservation. When we arrived, I made sure to state again I was pregnant and they assured me they’d had a briefing and everything they’d serve me would be 100% safe. Proceeded to then serve me a shot of gin and a course covered in crumbled blue cheese…and the Virgin Mary I ordered came as a bloody one! 😬) so now I’m super paranoid!

@Jodie thank you! It’s definitely anxiety for sure 😬 it’s just hard to tackle when I’m trying to enjoy myself and if I eat something I’m worried about, I spiral and it’s just not my idea of fun on my birthday to be fretting.

@Helen how awful!

@Helen I guess with these fancy Michelin star places they don't have much room for flexibility with a set or limited menu 🤷‍♀️ only thing I can think of. But rude they still served gin and blue cheese 🤢 I would have raised a complaint lol

I'm out for my boyfriends birthday next week to quite a fancy restaurant, and I've looked at the menu and there's definitely some things I can't eat but I'm sure most of it should be ok 😬 But I just don't really like going out anymore as my heartburn is so bad and can't really enjoy food like I used to!

I find eating out is one of the few pleasures I still have! There really isn't much we can't eat in the grand scheme of things and I think most are due to the risk of food poisoning or only worse in early pregnancy! There's loads of food we can eat :D

@Dominique in their defence, Stilton is considered okay to eat on the NHS website. I just think it's gross anyway 🤣. No excuse for the gin though.

@Loren it wasn’t Stilton, it was some sort of French blue, definitely not pasteurised!

@Louise yes the heartburn is real! 😂 eating everything with a milk chaser atm

@Rhiannon I wish I had your attitude! All I do is look at the menu and see all the stuff I can’t have - I’m so negative 😂

@Dominique yeah and the thing is, if they’d said, actually no, we’re a bit stuck on what we can offer you, we would have just postponed until I wasn’t pregnant. We def complained - got the bill taken care of and a free fancy bottle of red wine for me to inhale after I give birth 😂

I think breakfasts and brunches tend to be a bit safer, there's not anything pasteurised there and less alcohol around. Maybe a breakfast/brunch or invite your friends over for a takeaway would take some stress away? Happy birthday!!!

@Alice that’s such a good idea, thank you 🙏

No I love going out as night off cooking 😂 I do get tired tho and want to be home like 9/9:30! But tbh beyond avoiding the obvious things I’ve not been stressing too much, most things are safe for us to eat
