High blood pressure in hospital

Has any once else experienced high blood pressure but only when in the hospital for appointments? I went for my 25 week appointment on Wednesday and my blood pressure was high on multiple readings (158/90) so I was sent to triage for further monitoring. Whilst there and lay on the bed it started high but did come down to normal (128/80) after about 20 mins of relaxing. They did bloods and a urine test and all came back clear so they sent me home but asked me to come back today. I’ve been testing my BP at home since then and it has remained normal so I haven’t been worried. Well, I went back today and my BP was around the 160/90 mark again on multiple readings! Was sent to triage again for the same monitoring tests and also the have baby monitored (she is thriving in there) but my BP remained quite up and down. I’ve now been asked to test twice a day at home and go back to hospital again next weekend for another check before they consider medication. Has anyone else had this where BP seems completely normal at home but spikes when in appointments?? It’s stressing me out thinking that I may have to take medication when in reality 90% of the time my BP is fine 😭

I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this! I’ve had a similar BP issues. They had me bring my BP cuff in so that they could compare it to their cuffs and make sure my machine was correct. It’s so stressful. One of the triage nurses told me to try to sit for a few min before taking it. If you get a high initial reading, wait 15 min and then check again. Remember to keep your feet flat on the ground, no crossed legs or ankles, and try your best to relax. I’m 4 mo PP now and my numbers are finally normal without meds but I’ve heard that if you have BP issues related to pregnancy and need meds, it’s only temporary. Hang in there! ❤️

I have the same issue!! It’s so frustrating. I’m currently on meds and I do monitor at home twice everyday. I have followed all the right guidelines for measuring at home. It always reads between 110/70 to 128/85 at home but once I go for my appointment at the hospital it reads above 140/90. It grinds my gears and makes me stressed out in the hospital which doesn’t help. My bloods and urine are always fine and baby is also doing very well. What the obstetrician has advised is I take pictures of my readings at home as evidence as some people do have white coat syndrome.

Yep this is me! It’s called white coat hypertension. I’ve had it since an ectopic pregnancy and a miscarriage. BP in medical setting is 140 odd and at home it’s 115 😅😂 apparently it’s really common. I can barely get mine down in a medical setting x

🤣🤣 I felt like I was being stupid and just didn’t know how to measure my BP! I sometimes do it 3 times in a row at home just to confirm and always comes out fine. I feel a little better now knowing it’s quite common than I thought.

Thank you!! It’s so stressful isn’t it, I think I just get in my head about it once I’m in my appointment but when relaxed at home it’s always fine! I’ve got a blood pressure monitor that I can connect to an app so I’m hoping regular logged measurements over this week will help them to see there’s nothing wrong 🤞🤞

Oh lovely. What monitor and app are you using?

this can indicates a chance of preeclampsia so they being extra careful , if you start getting swollen feet watch out ..

I am in almost the exact same situation!! My blood pressure is ok at home (a little high but within normal, according to the chart it's high normal) but take me to a hospital or doctors and it shoots up, I'm actually going in to be monitored on Monday morning as they really are concerned about it, which then causes more stress and higher BP. ..

Yep! Happens to me all the time. I’ve never had good experiences in hospitals (spent a lot of time there because of my mom’s health) and they stress me out so much! Whenever my BP is tested in a hospital/doctor setting it’s always so high but then I test at home and it’s normal… so frustrating!

@Nissi it’s an Omron monitor with the Omron Connect app 😊

@Agne I understand why they are concerned and want it monitoring, but it’s just annoying that it is ONLY high whilst I’m in the hospital environment, I took it again at home an hour after I got back and it was back to normal at 125/82! Gets a bit frustrating 😅

Yes it happened to me. I get so anxious in hospital environnement that my blood pressure is elevated. It is the white coat syndrome.

I went through something similar during my pregnancy but after a few times of it being elevated at appointments only it continued to persist at home. Eventually I was diagnosed with gestational hypertension and induced at 37+5. Keep an eye on it and advocate for yourself!

Second time pregnant and faced this prblm both the times. After 20 weeks i have been asked for a urine test at every aptmt to ensure i am not developing preclampsia and my tests have been fine so far. Always low BP readings at home while exceptionally high at doctor’s. Just to be safe, i am prescribed baby aspirin this time but no other BP meds.
