Please try not to worry about it. If you do have it you didn't cause it. It's all determined by your placenta. Also our bodies have a weird way of knowing how much weight to gain! Now that doesn't mean go crazy and eat whatever but don't stress it too much! I ended both my first 2 pregnancies within the same 5lbs but started my 1st 10lbs heavier. This pregnancy i was 20lbs heavier to start and am on track to end at the same weight again. My body just wants to weigh a certain amount when babies are born. I've accepted it. I will say I had gd with my first but not my second and semi patiently wait my results from this mornings labs...
@Katie thanks, that makes me feel a lot better. I have a little caffeine every day but never go over 100mg.
@Chelsea wait so it has to do with placenta placement? How did I not know that?!? I just figured it wouldn’t be an issue because I’ve actually always run on the low side when it came to blood sugar (but still in the normal range), but with all the changes I just have no clue what to expect. So you had GD with your first? How did that change things in your third trimester? Just want to be prepared!
Yeah its all about the placenta. Not the placement but whether your placenta has an issue with glucose.
@Emily honestly it was a blessing in disguise. I changed my diet and didn't gain too much weight. I felt better and had more energy. My 3rd trimester was the best that pregnancy! When most people say they are exhausted I felt great!
Hi! I actually failed my 2 hr glucose test at 25w with a similar 20lb weight gain… but it doesn’t have anything to do with diet or weight gain really. From the class they had me take its about the placenta causing insulin issues. So it seems like it’s a bit of a luck of the draw who ends up with it- but I guess you can be more predisposed if people in your family are already diabetic.. which my dad and his whole side of the family have type 2.. I’m also 37 so I guess “advanced maternal age” can also be a risk of it too… so yea try not to be hard on yourself….
@Lindsey yes its nothing you did wrong!
@Lindsey I can’t believe I hadn’t heard about the placenta thing - I’ve taken classes and it was never mentioned! I feel better knowing whatever happens tomorrow it isn’t my fault. What do doctors recommend if you do fail? Again, just trying to prepare myself just in case. No one in my family has type 2 diabetes, but I also fall into the advanced maternal age category which I do know can contribute. I think I’ve been putting it off due to anxiety but I definitely want to have it done before my OB appointment Monday and I know the results come in pretty much immediately.
@Emily so if you fail the 1 hour you take the 3 hour test. Then if you fail that you will prick your finger 3 times a day after meals normally 2 hours. And you try to control with your diet. There are lots of options but the plate method worked best for me. If you can't control with diet (again not your fault some people just can't) then they might have you take insulin or medication. A lot can control with diet though!
I passed the glucose test this week and I was super nervous too. I gained a lot of weight and ate a lot of sweets throughout my pregnancy(though they say this does not matter as it is the placenta causing issues). While my husband and I don’t have diabetes, my grandma, dad and FIL have diabetes which I was worried it might have trickled down. Opposed to my worries, I passed the 1-hour test! I ate scrambled eggs and a few macadamia nuts an hour before the test as recommended by my OBGYN as I had other tests scheduled and had 4 tubes blood drawn out that day so going in with an empty stomach was not a choice. Don’t worry too much and don’t be hard on yourself! ♥️
I gained a lot of weight in my first pregnancy (I was tiny and just kind of filled out everywhere) and I limited caffeine but didn’t stay on a strict diet and treated myself to whatever I was craving and passed the test easily
