Migraine and giving birth

Hi, I have chronic migraine which has been much worse during pregnancy, to the point where I had to cut my hours and take a demotion to reduce some stress at work to try and manage them a bit better. I’m 22 weeks so still a way to go but got some anxiety around giving birth. If I don’t have a migraine, I have a headache and the last thing I want to do is push a baby out when I’m having a migraine or bad headache so wondering if I need to opt for c-section. Just wondering what other chronic migraine sufferers did/are planning for when you give birth?

I was actually so worried because everything seems to give me a migraine and I have them constantly. About the same spot in my pregnancy, around 20 weeks, they disappeared almost completely. I got them back not even a week after birth though, so maybe your hormones going back to normal after birth will give you some relief! Both of my experiences they will take care of you with meds if you need. Also i would bring this topic up to your dr so you can all be prepared and have a game plan. I had c sections with both my sons and if I ever had to do it again I would choose c section. It’s like an hour start to baby born and then maybe another half to a whole hour. Then you just relax with your baby, not being exhausted from labor and pushing forever lol I couldn’t imagine pushing a baby out at this point, but I know people say they couldn’t imagine getting a c section.

I have chronic migraine as well. I was basically told that when I go into labour if I have a migraine it'll be the least of my worries!!! I ended up needing a c section in the end anyway as my induction failed. People say the drugs they give you during the c section can cause a migraine as well. It's so difficult to manage.

I had the same worry but honestly I didn’t even think about it! Everything else just took over and I didn’t even notice if other things were going on in my body, it was so weird!! I’d definitely speak to your midwife about it or consultant if you have one, just to help ease your worries. I also had terrible headaches and sometimes migraines during the first and second trimester which went during the third! No idea why x

I wondered the same but honestly, when you're in labour there's not a single chance you'll be able to focus on any other pain x

I had a prescription for neurotec and then it changed to ubrelvy. That was tested and had no effects on pregnant moms and their babies. Plus I had to drink a cup of coffee a day and buy these ice/head wearable headphones and eye packs for when they are really bad. I still use it now. But I did my birth naturally and no pain meds. The first one is always relatively quick I didn’t believe at first. From start to finish it was a little less than 30 mins when I was fully dilated.

Also your contractions will probably be so intense you won’t notice your migraine. Mines are so bad that I have to turn the lights off and stay in bed with my eyes closed something because my eyeballs feel like they are gonna fall out and I need to vomit. I didn’t feel it

Hi, I also suffer from chronic migraine with aura, I have migraine gel caps that you can put in the fridge (even better in the freezer) and always have one handy. I tend to do frozen eyeballs and hot feet to try and pull the blood flow to the lower half of my body 😂 Also, if you choose pain relief during labour that should definitely help plus, contractions are pretty intense so that should deflect away from any migraine or headache you have.

These are great suggestions! My migraines got better in my second/third trimester. I’m hoping the same for you 🙏 I did, however, get a migraine with aura a few hours after giving birth which was rough. The nurses were quick to sneak me coffee and anti nausea.
