Starting solids

My LG is 6mo and ready to be introduced to solids. This week, I've tried a bit of BLW e.g. stick of potato, stick of avocado, and toast, following guidance from Solid Starts. I'm struggling with this so much, it's giving me way too much anxiety. Do you think its okay to stick to purees and mashed foods for say the first month, and then start to introduce finger foods perhaps in a month's time? Or are purees more of a choking risk? Ill let her try feeding herself with a spoon so its not all spoonfed by me. I'm so confused, there's so much conflicting information. I need some experiences to go off, please.

It’s absolutely OK for you to avoid finger foods for a little bit if it brings you anxiety. My daughter didn’t really start “finger foods” until eight months. She is now a year old and eats everything! There is really no timeline do what you’re comfortable with. Purées are fine.😊

Absolutely you can do purées for a month! I started purées at 5 months then at 6 months I started with melty puffs as they turn to mush, once I realised he was capable of holding food, moving round mouth I offered avacado slices, banana slices and toast and all went very well. I now have a 7.5 month old who still has 2 puréed meals a day and 1 BLW meal. Don’t put too much pressure on it, relax and trust your baby. Deffo stick to smooth purées for a bit though I would do mashed foods in a months time also x

@Lottie @Amber Thank you for the reassurance! When making puree, is it okay to mix more than vegetable together, even if it's for the first time? Obviously allergens I'll introduce one at a time and spaced out.

Oh absolutely!! Get creative with it make it fun. It’s a big step starting solids, but it gets easier as time goes on.

Absolutely I have a 7.5 m old that's on 2 purees meals a day and introducing melty snacks soon. Not doing solids or blw yet although I think she's ready my anxiety is not

Don't feel pressured into doing BLW just because the internet says so. Do what you feel is right for your child. I did a mix of puree from 6 months and moved to both around 7 and then gradually added more finger foods around 8 months then he went completely off purees

just curious, why is it giving you so much anxiety? are you worried about choking?

I didn’t give my daughter solids till 5 months but when I make purees I use carrots, broccoli, pumpkin, sweet potato, potatoes, corn and rice and I’m going to make some with pasta but haven’t tried meat with homemade dinners

@Izzie Yes 😞

I did purées only for 1 month and then introduced finger foods, I was petrified but now he eats loads of finger foods at 7 months x

Look up the difference between gagging and choking. Choking is what you need to watch for. Gagging is very common and it happens when they try to learn how to move food around their mouth. But if you need to do purées for your peace of mind, go for it.
