Yes I had quite a large one, I've got pictures if you want to see 🤣 happy to answer any questions, I did a lot of research when I found ouf
I had this as well as placenta Praevia, I had not one bit of bleeding or spotting the entire pregnancy despite also having fibroids. I had a Planned C section as my LO was small. I’m not sure I would go for a home birth anymore with that, instead maybe consider a midwifery led unit usually still calm and not much interference
@Charley did it come out in one piece? That’s the only worry with my plan to not have pain meds is having to do them anyway to get the rest out. Obviously I’ll talk with my midwife when I see her but any tmi info is appreciated 😂
@Kelsea I had a planned c section (not just due to this but a collection of reasons) and one lobe detached but the other did not so they had to encourage it out. Each piece was whole, but one of them didn't come away on its own.
I had this but they found out when I delivered the placenta! I had absolutely no issues with anything, came out whole, it was pretty crazy looking because each side was really big for a placenta on its own!
Crazy! They didn’t see on an ultrasound? I’m not sure what they saw on mine yet, just that the cord is attached in the center of the main part so I’m not super worried, just wouldn’t want anything to have to be scraped out 🫠
I had a bilobed placenta and it took 29 minutes and 30 seconds after me giving birth to come out. They said at 30 minutes they’d have to do a manual retrieval (😬) so I was incredibly relieved when it came out last minute. I did have some extra bleeding but not a full hemorrhage.
@Crystal that’s good to hear! I’m glad it worked out, I’m nervous about it not coming out in one piece.
My placenta was not bilobed but I did need to have it “scraped out” as you put it 🤣 was retained after birth and after an hour of waiting they took me to theatre to remove it. Just wanted to reassure you that even if that does happen, it’s ok 👍🏻 You will have a spinal/epidural before a manual retrieval and I didn’t haemorrhage.
@Sadie I would be having a home birth so I would have to go to the hospital to have that procedure done. My midwife has injections if needed to get it out, just hoping that would be enough and to see what others have experienced!
@Kelsea I’m not sure why it wasn’t caught before! Like Crystal, I almost ran up against the 30 minutes to get it out, but that was more because I apparently refused to push anymore once I had my baby in my arms 😂 It only took one tiny push when I finally listened to them.
@Kelsey haha I could see getting stubborn too, like nuh uh I did it I’m done 😂 I kinda wonder if they start to form like that because it was originally twins. But who knows! Glad it worked out well for you!
@Kelsea I did a lot of research into it, it's not that it used to be twins from what I can tell. It's correlated with IVF, subchorionic haematoma, and early pregnancy bleeding. One theory is a small number of cells detatch from the trofectaderm which is the cells that turn into the placenta on the outside of the embryo. These separate cells then implant away from the rest.
@Charley I don’t think they really know because there’s so many theories lol I also read it could be from vascular issues of the uterus.

@Kelsea oh yeah they definitely don't know for certain so it's just theories. I know mine wasn't twins as it was IVF and they only put one embryo back in! Most bilobed/succenturiate placentas are not seen on scans they're found out at birth. Usually they're pretty small. mine was two equal bits. I can send you a picture if you like but it's a bit gory obviously hah
We found out I had an extra lobe on my placenta when my midwife was checking after I had delivered my LG, as it wasn't picked up on my scans. I did have a postpartum haemorrhage and had to have clots manually removed by the Dr who had come to suture my episiotomy. If you're concerned, I'd discuss with your midwife/obstetrician
