Finger size food vs small bits

Can someone explain why is the guide saying finger size for 6 months and small bites for 8+ it doesn’t make sense to me. Like my baby could bite off a really big piece of food from the finger sized as opposed to I could offer small bites.

Finger length and width to start BLW so lo can learn how to bite and take appropriate bites and learn to not over stuff food in their mouth. Then once they have mastered biting and chewing you can if you wish move towards bite sized so they can develop their pincer grip. Hope this makes sense and helps xx

Also with the smaller pieces if they haven’t mastered chewing yet are choking risk

You are supposed to start with finger width strips. Taking the straps away once they're too short to hold onto etc. Between me being scared if choking and my lil guy always wanting to just cram it all in his mouth at once we got a late start. They say around 8-9months the sucking action stops naturally and small bits of food is recommended to prevent choking . Just give them lil bits of different textures. Let em move it around their mouth. Show them how to chew by doing it with your lips and teeth and overexaggerate it and show them by eating the same thing yourself.

Thank you ladies. My little girl actually chews and moving her tongue quite well, surprisingly. I’m just worried what should I do if she stuffs her mouth with a big chunk of food 🙈 I have her a slice of orange and she bit the edge of the skin of and swallowed it and today I gave her a half of banana and she bit of quite a big chunk and I think she swallowed it all without chewing. I haven’t seen her anyway
