Illness

Hi all! FTM worrier here!! Our 4.5 month old has had a cold since Wednesday and feeding has gone completely out the window 🫠 Formula fed - every bottle is a battle only managing to get 70-90mls down him in one sitting (normally drinks between 180-210mls every 3-4 hours). I am offering milk every two hours but he is just rejecting it, going rigid and red and crying. We are using calpol spray to try and get rid of the congestion and calpol when he’s had a temp but is there anything else I can do to help him? He is having wet nappies and seems smiley in himself - having lots more sleep but other than that it’s just the feeding that is stressing me out!! How long will it take for appetite to come back?! Tia!!!

You are doing well. It is so hard and worrying when they have a cold. My little recently had RSV and ended up in hospital.she was projectile vomiting after every feed too. The hospital advised as long as they are drinking about half their normal amount you do not need to worry, providing they have wet nappies etc. I also used a humidifier which was a game changer, and I also regularly suctioned babies nose. We also tilted her crib so her head was up to help the mucus drain x

When my LO had bronchitis the hospital told me ideally they’d like baby to be having 50% if normal feeds but if struggling like we were then 30% was fine. Just offer regular feeds as was also told little and often was best. Took 2 weeks to get back to feeding fully x

@Jane thank you so much xx

@Lucy thank you that’s great off to buy a humidifier 🤣🤣

My son recently had a gastro bug and feeding just went out of the window. Kept an eye out for signs of dehydration but my boy was fine despite 5 days of D&V. You've got to ride it out and they will get better! Obviously phone 111 if worried about temperature or dehydration x
