Future thinking, night feeds

We got given a ‘dad pad’ from the health visitor which is basically just a lot of information for dads/partners to read through but we’ve been going through it together this morning. In it, it says that ‘babies usually feed at least 8 times in 24 hours, including at least once at night. Do not look at the clock, be guided by your baby. It’s best to feed baby only as much as they seem to want’ I always thought you shouldn’t let newborns sleep for longer than 2-3 hours at a time without a feed and there is a lot of information online that states the same. So now I’m unsure of the right thing to do?

I just fed my first as and when he wanted, we never worried about how long he had between or anything like that ❤️

Yeah same as Cat..my mom's always said feed when they're hungry. I think the waking every 2 to 3 hrs is if under birth weight and advised.

Same as above, fed my first when she wanted it. Never worried about waking her as they will wake up when they are hungry x

OK thank you all, that’s good to know 🥰❤️

You wake them to feed until they are back at birth weight Then you don’t need to but they will wake you when they need

With my first we fed when he wanted it. This time my son was born at 34 weeks and were feeding him every 3 to 4 hours but by nearly 4 hours he's showing signs he's hungry x

I read (also heard in my breastfeeding course) that you shouldn’t wake babies because their brains are making synapses while they are sleeping + they’re growing, so leave them uninterrupted as much as possible

‘At least once at night’ what a joke! I wouldn’t worry about having to wake them, it’s more likely they’ll be constantly feeding! My baby is on the boob for 10-15 mins, off for 5 and then back on again! Nights are the worst for cluster feeding!

With my first we were setting our alarms every 3-4 hours and I can remember telling the midwife this and she told us to stop and that he’ll tell us when he’s hungry and he did. Was waking near the 4 hour mark. Will do the same this time round.

Thank you everyone, that’s really good to know 🥰❤️
