Has anyone been sent to the hospital by their GP for intravenous (IV) antibiotics?

What happens? is it a&e or a ward? how long did it take? Do you have to stay overnight? I'm worrying about childcare 😟

No I haven’t. But I did have to stay on the ward to have antibiotics for a month after giving birth. Ask your doctor for more information. What’s the dose? What’s the antibiotic? Why are you receiving them? Like what kind of infection do you have and why did you get it?

Depends on why you're having them, what they are, how often, and what services the hospital provides x

I had them after my labour for sepsis, I was in for 2 extra days until they were happy with my white blood count. Then, I was sent home with a a 10-day course of antibiotics. I can't see why you couldn't go home though, the iv took less than an hour.

@Elinor some hospitals won't hold the bed open and don't have the facilities to do it in the community (I'm an IV nurse in a community hospital) x

I have really really bad tonsillitis, 5 days of steroids and antibiotics helped but 2 days now after the course of treatment and it's getting worse again. It is making me really ill. I'm nervous to go back to the GP because I don't know what to expect from the hospital.

I’m a nurse. Generally gp will send you in through a&e and you’ll be triaged, the doctors will make a decision to admit if they think necessary. IV antibiotics can be 3x a day for 7 days & if you’re unwell they’ll need to keep you in for monitoring

I was kept in over night for some a couple weeks back but wasn't sent by the GP just 111 only had 2 dosed though, needed a 3rd thet decided they didn't want to give it to me as I was being dent home and ended up back on even stronger courses for another 2 weeks from home. I'd see what you can do lovely because if you go septic it'll be even worse, I know it's easier said than done though. They can tell you when triage hiw long they'd expect you to be but it may change xx
