Question re scheduling of elective csection

Hi there. I am 35 weeks and today saw a consultant who approved my request for a csection (purely a request, not on medical grounds)- we signed the paperwork and did my bloods/MRSA swabs. I was told that I would receive a date for my section in due course. This afternoon I checked my pregnancy notes app and have seen I have an ‘open appointment’ for a csection listed under my appointments, for two days after my due date. Am a bit surprised it’s this late. I also don’t know what ‘open appointment’ means- has this definitely been scheduled, or does it just mean the request is in the system? If anybody can shed any light I’d be really grateful as am a bit worried that it seems to be after my due date. Thanks so much :)

If that’s your first baby, they usually don’t come out naturally before 41 weeks so I wouldn’t stress about having the c section scheduled to two days after the due date

Mine is booked for 2 days before due date even with it been second baby and 1st came naturally at 38 weeks mine is kind of medical as I had a very traumatic first with a 3rd degree tear

Is there a reason why you thought it would be earlier? If there’s no medical reason for you to have one then I assume there’s no medical reason you would need it to be earlier? I had an elective for my second after an emergency, they would have scheduled me in at due date if I wanted to try for vaginal, as I didn’t they scheduled me in at 39+1 but that’s just to minimise the risk of an emergency C section when there’s a medical reason for having one (though I still had a choice). I’m sure you can ask for it to be earlier but it wouldn’t be before 39 weeks anyway.

Thank you! It is, so hopefully that will be the case- it’s just I’ve been repeatedly told it would be done at some point during 39 weeks. Maybe they’re just very very busy. But I can’t even figure out from my notes if it’s actually definitely scheduled for then or not!

Yes- I have been told repeatedly it would be at 39 weeks so just wasn’t expecting it to be beyond 40

Which hospital trust are you? It’s generally standard practice for a scheduled c section to be between 39-40 weeks (unless there’s a medical reason to do it earlier - I had PP last time so it was at 38 weeks) so I would call them for guidance and visibility.

Thanks @Emily! Am in Leeds. Yeah that was my understanding as well. I might give it a couple of days and see if I get a letter/text/call to confirm and then speak to my midwife either way to query

I was surprised as mine was booked for four days after my due date and I totally expected it to be at 39 weeks. In the end I promise you I was glad of the extra days to chill before she came 😂

So baby girl decided she wasn’t waiting for section date woke up with cramps around 1.30am waters broke 3.30 which was when I called hospital had to get son over to grandma’s arrived hospital 4.30 had her at 5am no time for section 😳 still all a bit stunned lol 😂

@Emily yea had to be stitched again though 2nd degree tear this time but she was coming and not waiting I was literally getting prepped and cannulated for theatre when had to push lol talk of labour ward how quick it all was
