Tax free childcare/ free childcare care 🤷‍♀️

What's the difference between tax free childcare care and free childcare in UK. First time mom here (don't have a clue). Which one offers the vest savings?

What do you mean by free childcare? The free funded hours that have been introduced? Tax free childcare is 20% of your fee is topped up by the government so if your child attends more than the free hours you’re entitled to. You can still get 20% off whatever you have left to pay

Yeah, the funded hours. Wasn't sure if you can only get one. Thanks for the info.

No problem. I’ve heard stories of some nurseries being funny about only providing the free funded hours if you don’t go any additional days so worth looking into at the nursery you want to attend

You can use both. The tax free childcare does have a limit though, of £500 every 3 months, so if your fees are very high then it doesn’t quite do 20% of your total bill. But the “free hours” as advertised also aren’t actually often free, most settings tend to charge something, like a consumables fee, and as Shanika said, some may have a minimum no. of hours or sessions your child has to do.

This has helped a lot.
